CAUTION: Will self destruct within 18 months November 3, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This laptop seemed to have a self destruct feature to initiate on completion of the warranty. In all seriousness, I purchased this laptop because of its speed, screen size, and great features. It worked fine for a few months. Then, it started crashing randomly due to overheating. I can't even begin to explain how frustrating this was. I have now had the laptop for 18 months and it will no longer function. The motherboard needs replacement. The estimated cost is $600. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
Love this Machine August 21, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've had my Satellite since July 2004 and haven't had a problem with it. I'm a gamer, and I tend to play for blocks of hours at a time(today was six or so). I also do a lot with ITunes and my IPod. It stands up to the demands of my media-friendly life. I've no problems with overheating; I do use a lapdesk which allows it to circulate air freely underneath the unit. (It's more comfy on the couch, also.) I would highly recommend this machine, and am actually looking to buy the new Satellite P105 (to keep up with the latest high-end gaming specs). Interestingly, I bought this to replace a Dell gaming laptop that had problems out of the box, and experienced so many problems with Dell customer service that I vowed to buy from an actual store from here on (Dell's standards seem to be dropping with the outsourcing). I am now a loyal Toshiba customer!
Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 Notebook PC-Design Flaw July 24, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
In the beginning my Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 Notebook PC would just shut down after over-heating. The screen would go blank and the machine would shut down inexplicably. However, the machine would eventually start functioning after awhile. It was used very little during its life due to its dependability. The machine quit functioning entirely in April 2006--less than a year and a half after purchasing it and after the one year warranty period expired.
A PC repair shop found the machine's over heating ended up destroying the mother-board and it will no longer function. I have written to Toshiba requesting assitance. If I get a response, I will post the results as a comment on this site.

Update October 2006: Toshiba response to my request was, since this is not a "prevalent problem" with the Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 Notebook PC, they WILL NOT fix or help to fix this flaw. They explained the reason it overheated and failed to function was its 3.20 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor runs too hot for the system's cooling system. This processor was built for desk PC's not laptops. They have since replaced it in the Toshiba Satellite P35-S609 Notebook with a processor built for laptops and no longer have an over-heating problem.
So, as one reviewer said, "I now have a piece of junk that makes a very expensive paper weight". L.DAVID
Defective Product July 22, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
After a few months my laptop began to shut down randomly. Because I've worked with some overclocking, I have a pretty good idea of what overheating looks like, so I called up tech support to tell them about my overheating problems. They "fixed" the unit claiming their was a short somewhere in the circuit that was drawing extra power. Now, a few months later, the system is doing it again. I've tried to clean out the system for better airflow, however, my laptop isn't cooling down any. I would recommend searching for a program called hmonitor to see just how hot your CPU runs. Mine is the same computer as above with a 2.8 ghz P4 and it idles at 50 C, which is well above recommended. A few minutes of activity, watching a movie, running a game, or anything else stressful on the processor, and it quickly shoots to above 70 C. Run it like that for more than a few minutes and it shuts down. Pentium 4's were not meant to be mobile chips; this product is most certainly defective.
Worked well for over a year, but now shuts down randomly May 17, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought my P35 S609 Dec 2004. It worked wonderfully for the past 18 months, but now shuts down randomly whenever I run several programs at once. Diagnostics run on it show no problems with the hard drive. I suspect it's overheating, as has been the case with many owners. I would recommend against purchasing this laptop if you plan to do more than surf the Internet.
