1 out of 5 stars Unreliable   November 14, 2007

I had ordered the 9190 about two months ago, having seen one over at a friend's house and thinking hey, thats cool. I read codes using an oscilloscope, and thats like primitive compared to this...plus my Jeep had started to stall in traffic and I wanted that to stop. If you know service these days, you know the only way to get quality reliable work is to do it all yourself. Meanwhile, I borrowed my friend's 9190 while waiting for mine and got to work.

The unit is pretty much plug and play, with all accessories to attach to various vehicle makes and models, all in a rugged carrying case. The 9190 has a 9V battery compartment, but I don't know if the unit ships with a battery in it. However, on some interface types the unit will draw power from the car data connector itself.

Initial impression was very good, with the device sporting a big screen and easy to use menus. Rather immediately, I had captured basic power train status and commenced recording data to help with an intermittent engine cut out in a Jeep TJ Sport 4 liter.

Heaven? Not quite...turns out the Jeep wasn't the only intermittent contraption that day because after about 15 minutes the 9190 locked up.

I had to completely shut the 9190 down and restart to get it to go again...a major pain in traffic. It locked up a couple minutes after that, and then refused to recognize the Jeep at all. My fellow car nut tells me its always done this since new, and that he uses it to simply capture codes, and it works fine in that regard. I can attest to that, but this problem required the additional (well, theoretical) capability of the 9190, and it wasn't delivering the goods.
The fix? Turn it off, unplug everything, wait a few minutes, and restart.

Not for my 3 bills, thank you very much.

Besides, mine wasn't going to be a gift and I had a very sick Jeep on my hands with snowboarding season rapidly approaching (read: top priority emergency). So, I did it the old fashioned way and bought & researched the manufacturers' shop manual for the Jeep & diagnosed a faulty crankshaft position sensor, an easy 15 minute repair (once you have a idea what the problem is, which Im sure a proper scan tool would have helped me with).

Eventually my own 9190 arrived, but I shipped it back immediately for a refund given my prior experience with the model, and noting other users were having similar problems. The refund agreement also spooked me. Basically, if you test it, you can't return it for a refund.

So watch out when ordering such devices online as some return policies state that even testing the unit voids your right to return it for a refund. If you are out for a code reader, especially the proven flakey 9190, check thoroughly your vendor's return policy before plunking your cash down and ripping the boxes open. You might just find yourself with two things now that need fixing.

One star, as an unreliable tool is not a tool at all, and quite a liability in some purchase situations that make it not worth the risk to even buy.

I first bought the cp9150, I was not impressed with all it does for the money. Then for extra $100 i bought Cp9190. I must say this has all the functionality you want from scanner.
PROS: easy to use, light at night display and the keys are nicer than cp9145 series. For the money CP9145 don't do much compare to other models, other models do even more then cp9150 Also don't get cp9145, the cables in Cp9150 which is the same unit as cp9145 except the cables and the carring box is worth the money spend for CP9150. Altough I was not impressed with its functionality for the money. no cable to upgrade from computer. you can't print the data. However, CP9190 is real deal for the money. It does so much compare to the CP9145 series.
The software comes with cp9190 is fantastic and update from USB make all worth the money.
CONS;
CP9190 is made in china compare to CP9145, CP9150 series made in US. It has freeze several time during active data collection. This could be manufacture default.
After all, If you have the money go for this unit cp9190. IF you don't care about OBD I go for cp9180 or cp9175. But if you really need the OBDI and budget is tight give CP9150 a trial. But I was not impressed with functionality compare to the Cp9190.
