I hope there isn't a part two July 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
SO, So, so, I heard an interview with Ms. Badu about this album where she said it was her "magnum opus". This self-aggrandizing statement made me think that either her ego expands past her brain and into her afro or that the album was in fact really awesome. The one and only other album I have of hers is Baduism and that is a sweet mix of music that I thoroughly enjoy getting down to. SO, So, so, I chose to go with my latter thought and buy the album.
SO, So, so, I completely regret my decision. SO, So, so, I completely regret my decision. SO, So, so, I completely regret my decision. SO, So, so, are you wondering why I am obnoxiously repeating myself over and over and over again saying the exact same thing? SO, So, so, are you wishing that you hadn't endeavored to read this review because it's annoying and repetitive? As I listened to this album where Erykah Badu thinks up a line of lyric that she thinks is amazing (and it's not)and then just repeats the same line throughout the song changing only the inflection (if your lucky), I wondered why she was torturing her listeners with chinese water drip style singing and I wished I hadn't wasted my money on this "magnum crapfest".
It's boring, repetitive, and has all these voice clips that are really distracting.
DON'T BOTHER. Don't Bother. don't bother....*fades out*

it took me a cople of listens to like this cd, but i like it now. alot of people don't like it because it's funky, but that's what sets it apart from other artists out there. i can appreciate her diversity in sound.

This album is amazing. There are a lot of old style beats that drop in and move your soul. Easily one of the best albums of the year. buy it.
A trip worth taking... June 13, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
First, let me say that Mama's Gun is one of my all-time favorite albums. I've never tired of it. I really didn't care for Worldwide Underground, which really hurt because I love Ms. Badu. I got this cd and popped it in the stereo and then came to a halt and had to stop and look through the lyrics and gave it a good listen. This is not a snap your fingers driving down the street with your girls kind of cd. You will not want to play it before a date or going to the club. However, you will love it if you are tired of tired lyrics and pre-packaged "divas" who can't sing, think or inspire.
I just saw Erykah in Chicago and was blown away by the way she shared with her audience. She gave a full 2-hour performance. Her voice was on, she danced and she delivered a show.
I will not pretend to be on Erykah's "level" and to know everything that she is talking about. But I will say that I enjoy her willingness to stay creative and true to herself. Her authenticity and eccentricity is something that admire and haven't grown tired of yet.
