HP Software Install Nightmare October 9, 2008 I attempted to install the software both from the accompanying disk & from the HP website, but was unsuccessful. Later, I attempted a second install from the software from the HP website, but failed again. Three separate HP tech support folks attempted to install it also - both from the web and from the disc. Not only did they all fail, but it seemed as if they kept no record of what the previous tech rep had attempted to do to fix the problem. Calls to customer service were tedious and time consuming. All told, I've spent about 10 hours with this problem and still don't have the printer working. In particular, after all this frustration, a call to customer service was greeted with attitude and abruptness. The rep simply didn't understand that I was struggling with a software install issue and not (I think) a bad unit. I'm on the verge of returning the unit and never buying another HP product again.
Great Printer September 9, 2008 Bought this to replace my scanner and printer. Works well, makes great double sided document prints (saves paper). It is a network device so all my computers can/do use it for scanning and printing and no one computer has to be on for it to work.
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST PLEASE September 7, 2008 Better CHECK OUT all the forums before you spend money on this printer. The software works only in a SMALL PERCENT of Vista installations, and HP ignores it. Google: No HP Devices have been detected OR HP Solution Centre will close now OR Printer Software Installation Stalls or Stops OR No Scan Options Refer to device documentations. Press OK' It will lead you down a path of sapping your time while HP sells more and more. You may think it will be just fine on you computer, because if it works on any it must work. NOT TRUE. IT ONLY WORKS IN CERTAIN CASES, NONE OF WHICH ARE NORMAL. The machine is fine, good even. THE SOFTWARE IS NOT NOT. SO IF YOU INTEND TO USE IT WITH YOUR COMPUTER, WELCOME TO THE CROWD OF PEOPLE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE WHAT THEY SOLD US WORK.
Horrible software installation September 6, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Horrible software. The software that came with the printer did not work. Nor did the software from their website. I managed to get this printer working from the plug and play on Microsoft XP, I only directed the program to the included HP CD for the drivers to get it working.
In order to use the scanner, I use a the Photoshop Starter Edition to obtain scanning images from the scanner.
Poor performer September 3, 2008 I bought this HP to replace a Canon that died shortly after the warranty period - the second Canon to do so, so I decided to try something different. I've had the HP for a couple of months now, so I've had a chance to run it through its paces. It's a pain to assemble, but once that is done you won't have to deal with it again. It is a pretty good printer, using reasonable amounts of ink and producing a sharply printed page. However, I use the scanner a lot, and particularly the auto-feed. This is quirky; it jams frequently, and also skips pages. It will often display "paper loaded" and then fail to feed the sheet, producing a pathetic clicking sound as it misses its grip. The scanner is quirky with Paperport 11 and I still have not worked out all of the settings to get it to work consistently, if not smoothly. If you use the HP scan software you will have better success, but be warned it is really, painfully slow. Finally the fax is OK but lacks a hook key. In other words, if you call a number with a fax that has to be started manually, or if you use a calling card that announces your balance before making a connection, then you will not be able to fax because the machine will detect that there is no handshake and disconnect. Other machines (including Canons I've had) have a hook button - you wait for the fax on the other end to transmit (listening to the call through the built-in speaker) and press send once you hear the tone, so the link can be made.
All in all, this is a good printer, an OK flatbed scanner, a poor ADF scanner and fax, and not a fax for anyone who needs to depend on it. Naturally problems with feeding sheets will also affect the product's performance as a copier. I do not recommend this machine - too many problems and too many compromises.
