Great so far, but not sure how long it will go July 25, 2008 I was really shocked after opening the brand new box to power on the stylish SD870 for the first time and find out the screen saying "Lens Error, Restart the Camera". The lens was already out and wouldn't get back on any button.
I searched online and it seemed a certain percentage of Canon SD users were experiencing the same trouble. It happened for both the new DCs and the old ones. Most of these customers had to contact the support center and wait for a couple of weeks before getting it back.
Lucky for me, it turned out that after I charged the battery for a couple of minutes and put it back, the camera worked as great as it could be. The shooting is much faster than my old SD600, the screen is huge, and the photo stitching is a lot of fun.
So most likely, the initial problem could be from the compatibility between new battery and the camera. Still, such thing never happened on any of my other cameras, never. I just hope this is not going to recur afterwards, especially during the trip!
Other than the lens problem, my other complain is that Canon does not have any fancy brand-accessories. There doesn't seem to have a lot of choices of high-quality camera cases other than the recommended black PSC 55, whose metal button may just cause scratches to the camera body as some PSC did on my old SD600.
JUST RIGHT July 21, 2008 i did a major amount of research looking for the perfect point and shoot camera. quality of the picture was not the only consideration. i wanted small size, big bright screen, ease of use, reputation, weight, camera appearance, mac compatible, speed, shutter lag, and endless other concerns i can't even remember. i read reviews, checked sites, read peoples posts [ like this one ] and went to stores. i bought and returned cameras because they didn't measure up to the scrutiny. [ sorry, i am not going to name names ]. i , in fact, drove myself nuts. sound familiar? i bet alot of you are going through the same thing. well, look no further, because this one is just right. really, although it is a little too big and too heavy, nothing is perfect, and it is worth that trade off. the weight gives it a very solid feel, and the size enables the 3" screen i want. this camera is great, and, yes, i am happy. the amazon price was great, and the service, as usual was stellar. i got a 2 gig card, and all is well. if you take the plunge, you will take great pictures. it's about the photographer, not the camera, but this one will help you tremendously.
Does what it should, but broke after one month July 21, 2008 This is my fourth Canon digital and I purchased it for three main reasons; Size, wide-angle lens, good reviews. In general it performs as advertised and the small form factor is convenient. It is not a pro-camera and offers few manual controls - but you know that when you buy it. It cannot replace a good DSLR nor is it good as my older G5. But that said, I cannot fault the portability of this camera. It is very useful to have a quality camera that you can just put into your pocket and take out as needed. This, however, highlights a serious design flaw - the on/off switch is too easy to engage (a slider would have made more sense). This means that the camera can (and does) come on in error. If this occurs while in a pocket it is easy for the camera lens to malfunction. This happened to me and many others on this and various other forums. This problem can be easily solved by placing the camera in a case - but to do so negates the reason why I bought it. So my feelings are mixed. The photo's are fine as snapshots, and the camera performed well in the month that it worked. I should note that I am waiting to have mine returned from Canon as warranty repair - but the Fedex shipping cost me $25, which unlike many other firms, they do not refund.
Dynamite Camera! July 21, 2008 Great little camera~ easy to use and WHAT a BARGAIN! I take about 1,000 photos a month for my business and am electronically challenged so the ease of operation is at the top of my list. Can't beat a Cannon!
Powershot SD870IS Best Digital Point and Shoot Yet! July 21, 2008 Ive used many 35mm and digital cameras over the past 25 years and this little gem is the best of the bunch. Fantastic exposure in all modes with a respectable video mode. It sports the widest angle lense available on a point and shoot with a decent zoom as well. I can't imagine a point and shoot getting any better than this, but if it can be done, Canon will have it out soon enough! I bought this for my wife, but will soon purchase a second for my business travels as well. I love this camera!
