 Bad and Good November 13, 2008
I bought the Belkin to use as a range extender for my new Canon wireless printer. One of the reasons why I bought it was the easy one button setup. It was anything but that! I tried to set it up by powering it up near my current Linksys router, pressing the button on the back for 10 seconds and then releasing. It was supposed to lock onto the strongest signal (my SSID) and duplicate it. It did lock onto my Linksys, but when I plugged moved the Belkin and powered it up again, well within range of the Linksys, it would not lock in the SSID again. The searching light just kept flashing. After several attempts I decided to call India.
The rep was fairly knowledgeable, but a little hard to understand. After going through a bunch of troubleshooting for an hour which included hooking up the Belkin to my laptop via the supplied ethernet cable, she declared it defective and gave me a case number. The next day, Amazon couldn't have been easier to get an RMA, printing out the labels and returning the item. I received a new one in a couple of days. Kudos to Amazon!
This time when I did the setup and the Belkin locked in on my Linksys SSID, I immediately unplugged the Belkin and plugged it in 30 seconds later, but right next to (1'from)the Linksys. Well as you might have guessed, it didn't lock in the signal again! :-(
Been there done that! So I called India again, gave them my previous case number and started the troubleshooting again. I knew right away that this guy had no clue, so I asked for a Level 2 Tech. He was very gracious and put me right through to Level 2. The Level 2 guy really knew what he was doing and I could understand him very easily. It did take us a while(1 hr)to manually configure and test the Belkin by running various ping tests. He kept trying to establish a fixed IP address, but I knew that my ISP uses dynamic IP addresses. When we got that resolved it was up and running like a champ.
Conclusion - If you want an inexpensive 1 button solution for a range extender, this isn't it. Shame on you Belkin! If you are willing to spend some time on the line with tech support (2 1/2 hours in total for me) then this is the product for you. Once operating, it works great and the signal to my wireless printer is pegged at 100%.
 Not worth the hassle November 12, 2008
It did improve my reception. However, it drastically slowed down my connection. I felt like I was on dialup.
I returned the unit and decided to just increased the transmission power using dd-wrt which has about the same effect sans the slow down in the download speed.

First off...to get yours set up follow Chovy's review, it is VERY thorough and helpful.
I just want to add my 2 cents based on my personal experience, hopefully saving someone hours of frustration and providing some insight.
I added this WURE(ver. 2000) to my existing wireless network consisting of a Belkin Wireless N Router (F5D8233-4) utilizing a WPA/WPA2-PSK encrytion with AES+TKIP.
I had no problem with the WURE seeing and communicating with my network...my problem was LIMITED/NO CONNECTIVITY to the internet. So if this also is your problem and you're using a similar setup here's some pointers that may be helpful.
-If you receive the ver. 2000; DO NOT "UPDATE" your firmware. You will actually be rolling it back with older firmware meant for ver. 1000. The ver. 2000 firmware is NOT available on their website and seemingly not from belkin themselves (via phone/email) either. I'm working on getting a copy of it though, since I made that mistake and am probably missing out on some minor improvements between the versions.
-Change the encryption mode; setting TKIP was my demise. Changing it to AES was my fix and allowed me to finally connect to the internet. (my router is supposed to do both, depending on demand)
-Another fix may be to change your broadcasting channel.
-I named my WURE SSID differently from the parent router. Doing so didn't affect the communication of the two. This prevents me from being forced to go through the slower 54mbps WURE to access my network instead of directly to my N router if the WURE signal reception is stronger. However, giving them the same SSID will allow seamless transitions between WURE and your parent router. Basically comes down to the power of choice or the convenience factor.
My rating is based strictly on setup. The accompanying cd is useless and phone support just walks you through what you've probably already tried to begin with...same goes for email support. You're basically left to your own vices to figure it out. Thank goodness for the internet.

Service was great not the product November 4, 2008
The the wireless-G extender was a bad buy because it isn't compatible with Windows Vista and there is no warning on the outside of the box. Only after you open it does it tell you that Vista and a few other OS don't work on it.

I am a fairly technical person, but like others, I found the initialization process challenging. The biggest barrier was that the installer on the enclosed CD did not load (XP SP2, running over Bootcamp on a Macbook). I called the toll-free number, and twenty minutes later was a surfin' fool. An excellent product, well worth $38 and 20 minutes.
