Bad product...worse cusstomer support October 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased one of these drives in April 2008 for storage of a vast photo library. In mid-August it crashed. I contacted G-Tech (a whole adventure in itself with no 800 number and 15-20 minutes wait time for a representative). I returned the original device with instructions to retrieve the files. Three weeks later a new drive arrives but no files. Then the real odyssey begins. Three unanswered emails led to two phone calls only to find out that they did not retrieve the files but would try to locate the bad device so that they could get the files. Five days later I am informed that the device has been found and they have the files. This from their rep, one Miguel Huerta. Two more weeks of waiting, no files. After four unanswered emails to Mr. Huerta I call again to speak to a manager. Three days later I am informed that they were unable to retrieve the original files. They could, however, send the original drive to an outside recovery company (of course, for a hefty fee). By now it is the second week of October. The fact is that I am out over 10,000 images and I needed some long breathing sessions to release my frustration at such irresponsible customer service.
Excellent! Have Two! No Problems! October 16, 2008 These drives are magnificently designed and built, and G-Tech offers excellent support.
For some other vendors I can't say the same, but G-Tech Q drives (nor the LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ 301199U 1 TB USB 2.0/FireWire400/FireWire800 RAID System) give any problems. A power cable was replaced on one of the Qs while under warranty with G-Tech's very quick and helpful technical support.
Considering that cable replacement was needed after one of Apple's lamentable updates - as the Internet buzzed over "Casper madly flinging firewire devices injuriously from 'fruit'" - and the computer itself went under, we may look tomorrow and sea the actual floor of the Atlantic, itself, with a few shiny G-Tech Qs (and Lacie Big Es) marching formidably across!
Hunky, brawny, built, mad, bad, bank, backed, stacked, packed, all that, chips, uncommon, unrivaled, unmatched, unheard of, unm-unm-humh!
Pefect Match for the Mac Pro October 12, 2008 Already formatted to work with Time Machine. Has Firewire 800. Lookes great. The perfect fit for the Mac Pro as an external HD for the Time Machine Application.
Very satisfied with the G-Drive Q 500GB August 27, 2008 I am very satisfied with this purchase. It has all the interfaces I could ever ask for! I have owned the G-Drive Q 500GB for about a month now and have had no problems what-so-ever. Working perfect as a Time-Machine volume. I'd like to note that G-Technology actually honors a 3-year warranty for all of their G-Drives now, so make sure to register your product once you receive it.
Very Happy with my new G-Tech August 21, 2008 This is a very solid external HD. I purchased this after experiencing some nightmare scenarios of failing external hard drives, including one that started smoking... The G-Tech feels solid, has a spinning sound that is reassuring- you can always tell that it's turning on. I recommend it for all audio-visual professionals using ProTools and Final Cut Pro.
