Product Description Rick Steves? Convertible Carry On is the most versatile carry-on bag you?ll find. As Rick?s favorite, he had no problem living out of it for three months. This large 2,500 cubic-inch bag features three outside pockets?perfect for often-used items. Includes handy extras: a pair of mesh bags and a clip-in security pouch, and both internal and external compression straps. For extra capacity just pull open the fullperimeter expando-zipper, and its capacity jumps to 3,000 cubic inches. The Convertible Carry On easily converts from a smart-looking suitcase to a handy backpack, with comfortably-curved shoulder straps and a padded waistbelt. To use as a suitcase, the straps and waistbelt safely tuck away in the back (or check it as luggage in ?expanded? mode).

To italy and back July 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Great bag with lots of storage, easy to carry etc..
but i had a connecting flight from bologna to rome. The domestic flights in italy had small storage area. This bag did not fit into those.
The crew had to make special arrangement for me to accomodate this bag.
otherwise this is a good bag with lot of comfort.
FYI - Keep an eye out at REI outlet, i bought this for 47 USD. The REI outlet sale is usually during the summer.
If you are traveling domestic in italy, i suggest you check this bag in and not carry.
awesome May 19, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My wife and I ordered one each for a two week vacation to Italy. I was amazed at how much stuff we could pack into these bags and still count the bags as carry on (folks at Air France almost seemed disappointed when the bag fit into the size tester...they were having a field day making people check their bags that day). The bags were comfortable on our backs and made traveling from place to place easier than I expected. I would definately recommend to anyone who has a busy itinerary.
Convertible Bag Saves the Day May 16, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We just got back from a trip to Italy using this bag for 3 weeks. My wife used the rolling bag and I shouldered the convertible bag. This worked out great: some places we rolled (with my day pack on wife's bag extended handle) and some places we lifted both bags. Both Rick Steves bags are super sturdy, with great zippers, many compartments, and extra mesh bags. We really enjoyed using these bags. They expand out if you want to check them...and by the end of the trip, we had to expand them.
Great carry-on May 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great bag to travel with, it holds a-lot and you can still take it with you in the plane. I took a two week trip through Europe, and this bag was all I needed (except for the two bags my wife had to take)
Great Bag April 30, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've used the bag twice and it is very good. It is much lighter than a roller bag. That is great for people who want to stick with a carry on when the weight limit is low. It is comfortable as a backpack, not as comfortable as my Osprey Ariel but I don't use this for backpacking. There is plenty of room for a 2 week trip as long as you pack light and plan to either do or pay for a little laundry along the way. My rule is if I don't wear it twice I don't take it. I found only one negative to the bag. When lifting the bag into the overhead bin on an airplane, it takes significantly more strength to get it up there than a standard 22 inch rollaboard. I think the reason is that it has no stiff structure and so it deflects in all directions. If I come up with a solution for this I will post it later.
