Amazon.com Product Description
Designed exclusively for those seeking the ultimate in performance, the Beltronics Vector 985 radar laser detector provides professional drivers with every amenity and then some. The Vector 985 is unsurpassed in X, K, and Ka radar sensitivity, features, and functions, and it uses Motorola Flash Microcontroller technology for software upgradeability. To maintain its readiness to accommodate new police traffic monitoring technologies (like Spread Spectrum), this detector has the highest possible capability to adapt to new types of traffic radar monitoring. It uses a total of 64 digital voice and text messages to give you the most specific data possible. The detector also offers different modes for different modes of travel, including a highway mode (for suburban travel), a city X mode (for moderate urban travel), and city X/K/Ka mode for "extreme" urban travel).

A built-in tutorial walks you through all the unit's features, and the display can be set for bright, dim, or dark. Beltronics's proprietary AccuSweep feature pinpoints detection of Ka narrow frequencies, while its AutoScan mode automatically adjusts to X/K/Ka sensitivity levels wherever you drive. Five operational modes consist of normal, modification, quick start, tech mode, and voltage-meter mode.

Other driver selectable features include X band (on/off), K band (on/off), Super Wideband Ka (on/off), audio alerts (auto, mute, or continuous), radar/laser (digital voice or unique tones), Safety Warning System (on/off, voice or tone), audio/visual scroll rate (fast or slow), and an option for inverted display. The unit also has fully adjustable audio levels, instant on/pulsed radar warning, quick volume, and memory retention. It includes a custom anodized aluminum travel case.

4 out of 5 stars Good unit most of the time   January 16, 2007
I've had this unit for just over two years now and although I only use it on the highway, I have to say it works pretty well. Detects Ka band well in advance, even on small hills and around curves. Only problem I've had with the unit is the speaker broke. Since it's out of warranty Beltronics wants $80 to fix it. A bit much for such a minor repair.

I purchased this BEL after selling an earlier to upgrade. The rearward facing sensor picked up a cop 4.5 mins before he pulled up behind me!. The falsing is minimal & its great you can programme it to your style. This a top radar & worth the investment!.

5 out of 5 stars #2 Detector in the Country (but not by much)   January 22, 2004

This is it..if you are considering buying the BEL 985 and want the best radar detector for the money, this is the one to buy. Only the much more expensive ESCORT 8500 beat the BEL 985 but only by a little in flitering, not detection of police radar. I have this radar detector and it's awsome. Most usuable feature is the ability to "turn off" X Band reception which eliminates almost all FALSE ALARMS. In my state (FLA) only K and Ka Band can be used by police radar.
So when my BEL 985 lights up and alerts....it's police radar almost all the time and at a range of up to 2.5 miles. If you are going to buy a radar detector, this is the ONE to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value   December 23, 2003

Bought this from Amazon about 3 months ago after I blew by a cop in my new Maxima. So far the unit works great. Minimal false alarms. It's obvious that in the city there are many X band stimuli, you just have to keep the unit on "Autoscan" mode which will greatly reduce the low intensity X band alarms. There is a silence button that I find useful. The alarm intensity level is a good indication of police presence. This thing definitely detects radar very well. Of course there is no fullproof detector, so don't get too cocky. Only one real complaint: The windshield mount is very noisy. I ended up mounting on the dash with a wedge and some velcro. Great $5 solution.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Range - one of the 3 best detectors available   November 15, 2003

The Vector 985 is one of the 3 best detectors available and also happens to be the least expensive.

It's got excellent range and can pick up signals from weird locations. I've gotten GENUINE K and Ka readings coming from below a mountain road and downhill behind a subdivision surrounded by houses, trees, etc...

I actually slapped on my old Cobra ESD9200 next to the Vector 985 just to test them out. The Cobra was dead silent UNTIL I was literally in front of police radar. The Vector 985 had been going nuts 1-2 miles from the radar source.
