Finally Freedom July 9, 2008 A friend told me that our house looked like a used bookstore. Every wall and hallway was lined with bookcases - five people in the family, four avid readers with eclectic tastes. And for those with allergies, dust was a HUGE problem.
Kindle has put an end to that! Although I can't bring myself to give away or sell our books, with a few exceptions I have boxed them in labelled storage boxes and stacked them in closets.
WE LOVE KINDLE! It has truly revolutionized the way we live. Think cluttered Victorian to Shaker simple. From old Anne McCaffrey sci fi to the latest Lee Child, from Jim Wallis to Charles Darwin, the Kindle store has met our needs. Ask Kindle NowNow has saved us many a time from those agonizing "it's on the tip of my tongue" moments. For weather, checking flight status, etc. its web is always there - I have yet to find a place where my Kindle wouldn't connect. And there is nothing like always having Dave Barry around to pass the time while waiting in line.
For my family, media storage has been a huge problem - books, videos, cassettes, CD's, DVD's, video games. So I am REALLY, REALLY, loving the Kindle. No minor shortcomings (ability to organize items on Kindle) can take away the freedom we have to store hundreds of titles on tiny little devices. THANK YOU AMAZON!
Love my Kindle July 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My wife and kids gave me a Kindle for my Father's Day & Birthday & Anniversary present at the beginning of June. I have been reading with it non-stop since. I absolutely love it. I have been using it only for books so far, so I cannot comment on other uses such as newspapers or periodicals. The display is very easy on the eyes - I think it may be easier on the eyes than some books I have read. You can operate it quite well with just one hand freeing the other to hold up that tea/coffee/cocktail while you read.
I have been very pleased with the selection of books available at the Kindle store, and all books I have purchased have downloaded in under 1 minute - so the whispernet works well with excellent throughput for me. I could not find one book I was looking for and I wrote the publishing company, and they are in the process of making all of their titles available at the Kindle store (ECW Press) so that is encouraging - I am sure many other publishers are in the same boat so I would expect the selection to improve dramatically over time.
Also, Amazon's customer service was fantastic. When I started using the Kindle it was connected to my wife's Amazon account and I ordered my first book. So I called up customer service and they credited my wife's account for the cost of the book and I then, with great ease, entered my own account information into the Kindle and re-purchased with my own account. Also, she had paid the 399 price - must have just missed the price drop, so I brought that up and they credited her account the difference (I think 40 or 50 bucks).
I have traveled (I have to travel for work occasionally) with the Kindle and I really appreciate that I do not need to worry about looking for titles in the airport book stores and hope that I find something I like or that I finish the book at an inopportune time wish I had another, or have to lug multiple books around. All of these worries are gone. It works well on the plane - the only bummer is having to turn it off for take off and landing. Hopefully the FCC will change the rules for certain electronic devices at some point in the future, but I will not hold my breath on that. The battery life (with the wireless turned off) seems quite long. I haven't exactly timed it but I can read for a couple of hours each night and it seems to last for over a week (maybe two). I was sitting next to someone who was reading an e-book on their PDA and they told me their battery life on that PDA was about 2 1/2 hours - so this is quite a bit better than that - charge it up and have no worries about running out of juice during your travels.
It is probably a bit too pricey for mass adoption, so hopefully the price point will drop over time. I am happy to have a techno-gadget that is highly utilized and saves trees so I can feel a bit "green" about it! Hope you found this review somewhat useful.
Kindle experience July 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Highly recommend the Kindle.
Only faults are: Many books I would like to down load are not available. It is hard to pick up the Kindle without changing a page.
I'm a fan July 9, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love my Kindle. I travel continually, and my suitcase used to be half full of books. I love having only the kindle instead. The whispernet service is not available when I travel outside of the country, but it's easy to download items onto my Kindle with a cable to my computer in those cases. I find it comfortable and enjoyable to read it even for long periods of time, but then I am a person who enjoys reading on a computer too. I use my Kindle to subscribe to a newspaper and I love having the paper immediately available each morning no matter where I am. Being able to look up words I don't know using the Kindle dictionary, underline, cut out and save sections separately, and to write notes about the text are all additional nice features, even though I haven't used those yet. Only about half of the books that I want to read are available in the Kindle version, because I have somewhat unusual taste in books, but that hasn't been a problem, because there are still enough Kindle books that I want to read, that I have enough to keep me very busy reading. Right now I'm reading a Kindle book in French, so I'm waiting for Kindle to provide the dictionary function in other languages too. The only problem I've had so far is that my husband is sometimes reading it when I want to. It's beginning to look as if we might need 2 Kindles.
Excellent Gift!! July 9, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I received the Kindle for my birthday. It is a great present - easy to use and convenient for reading the paper, magazine subscriptions or a book. My only issue is that I occasionaly hit the PREV and NEXT page buttons that run down the sides of the Kindle. Otherwise I love it.
