The display also helps you control hands-free calling, traffic alerts, and the FM transmitter, all from the screen of your personal travel assistant. Which nuevi is Best for You?: Click here to see a quick, simple comparison of features for all Garmin nuvi GPS navigators Wider screen lets you see more of what's around. Compare these actual size views of a 3-inch (diagonal) screen and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen | Widescreen -- See Better, See More The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push. FM Transmitter -- Hear Better, Hear More Instead of straining your ears to hear turn-by-turn directions or your favorite MP3s, you can enjoy wireless FM audio transmission via the nuevi 660's wireless FM transmitter. Tune your car's radio to the appropriate station and you'll hear all the nuevi's audio, including voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system. The nuevi 660 includes many "must-have" entertainment and travel tools, including digital music and audio book playback, JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, and more. All these great features make the nuevi 660 a complete Personal Travel Assistant. First Rate Map Data The nuevi 660 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nuevi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. Garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping. In addition, the nuevi 660 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every Garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our Garmin Store. Hands-Free Calling In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nuevi 660's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nuevi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, Garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log. Integrated FM Traffic Receiver | Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nuevi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time. In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the Garmin website. | Easy To Use Interface Garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip. Beyond Navigation Browse your stored pictures with an easy-to-use JPEG viewer. | A handy MP3 player lets you play songs stored on SD memory cards. | nuevi 250W accepts custom points of interest (POIs). Garmin nuvi 660 4.3-inch widescreen bluetooth portable GPS navigator July 9, 2008 We really enjoy this GPS. It's clearly detailed. The voice can be muted if you get sick of the machine voice. Gets you "close" to the area if you don't have a physical address. Have one experience of us getting lost because we were in a remote area and it thought there were roads where they were only plotted!! Got to see a black bear cross the remote road!
Outstanding Touch-Screen Interface July 9, 2008 The touch-screen inerface is logical and intuitive. This device is so good that a users manual is not needed. I like the ability to chose an Australian accented male voice prompter to give directions. So far nearly all routes chosen and presented seemed excellent. Its a terrific help in unfamiliar territory. Sometimes it seems to force an Interstate route at the expense of time and distance, but I would trust it to "take me there". I have a built-in navigation system in my car, it cost nearly five times as much as the nuvi 660, but it is "left in the dust" by this excellent unit. Hats off to the Garmin developers who put this on the market!
Great GPS for the $$$ July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got it last month and tried it on my trip from Raleigh to Atlanta which is like a 6 hr drive. It was really handy. Once I took a wrong exit it recalculated quickly and put me on the right track. Recalculation and accuracy are key features and they work well w/ this GPS. POI is great but I am sure any GPS brand these days will have wide selection of POI.
I used the hands-free Bluetooth w/ my Samsung A-737 phone. Just awesome. I tried the pre-loaded MP3 songs and it was good. I have not tried playing w/ an external SD card yet. Also Garmin was kind enough to give a FREE update of 2009 Maps and I upgraded it right before my trip !
Overall, it is a great GPS. I love the big 4.3" display. Before I got this GPS I had Navigon 2100 (3.5"). This is definitely much better than the Navigon in terms of recalculation. I am glad I returned it and got the Garmin.
Good deal! July 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Comprehensive package. GPS options and accuracy is great as expected from Garmin:). Good quality phone car kit & mp3 player too.
Very good but not great July 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got a 660 about a year ago, mid-2007, and carry with me whenever I travel. I travel a lot for my job, and the Nuvi really helps find addresses and restaurants when I'm on the road. I find the navigation to be very good but less accurate than the Magellan NeverLost systems I've used in rental cars in the past. The Nuvi frequently wants to route me off the highway and thru towns that I know will be much slower. It doesn't take into account traffic lights and stop signs, so you can't trust the estimated arrival time it displays.
I use it in the car and on planes to listen to podcasts I've downloaded to it, so the dual use is especially wonderful. I found the photo viewer quite poor in that it doesn't reliably display the pictures full-screen; there is often black all the way around it or else it is crudely cropped with no way of changing it. I suppose if you sized your pictures to be exactly the size of the Nuvi's screen, they would look fine. Also annoying is the warning screen that pops up every time you turn the unit on, whether or not you're moving. No other type of electronic device warns you not to use it while you're driving; it's just stupid, clumsy legalese.
One weird thing I've found is that there are some audio files that I can't get rid of. The interface doesn't allow you to delete audio files (you have to load and delete from a computer thru a USB cable), and some "deleted" files still show up in the Nuvi's audio library no matter what I do (including deleting all audio files and overwriting it with numerous new ones).
Since getting the 650, I've purchased a 600 for my mother, because I found that I didn't need the Blue Tooth or FM transmitter functions, and she wouldn't either.
