Amazon.com essential video Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Titanic flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister. Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous Asian films (such as Eat Drink Man Woman). Thompson's script won an Oscar, and 1995 was a fine year for Jane Austen all around: Persuasion was made into an excellent picture, and Emma became the spritzy high school comedy Clueless. --Robert Horton

Sense and Sensibility July 7, 2008 This is a typical Jane Austen romance, beautifully written and masterfully performed. The witty dialogue is well casted and acted by charming and professional perfomers. Highly recommended, especially for Jane Austen fans.
Love Anything Austen June 21, 2008 Again, the movie brought the characters to life. Please read the book, wonderful introduction to the movie.
Emma Thompson, as always, gave a great performance.
Perfection June 6, 2008 This movie was well done. I loved the beautiful scenes of the English countryside, they made it feel as though you were there. The chemistry between all the actors was very strong and every scene just flowed so naturally. They really did a gorgeous job on this movie I don't think you will be disappointed. I do want to recommend you read the book first, it's always a good tribute to the author, as well as to see what the author was trying to portray. Some other movie recommendations would be "Emma" with Paltrow, "Pride & Prejudice" both A&E and Knightley versions`, and I know this is not an Austen movie but I just want to throw it in "A Room with a View" such a great movie. As for books that are similar but not exactly like Austen, the authors would be Victoria Holt aka Jean Plaidy (Mistress of Mellyn for starters), E.M. Forester, Bronte sisters, and Philippa Gregory are all very entertaining reads.
A "Must Have" For Your Romantic DVD Collection June 2, 2008 The product is exactly as advertised and arrived in a timely manner. What's more, the price is even competitive, which means I don't have to wait in a long line at Walmart to purchase it. Who could ask for more?
My favorite S&S movie June 1, 2008 I am a Janeite, and I love Austen's books AND the movies that have been made from them. I have seen just about every tv and movie adaptation, and this is my favorite version of Sense and Sensibility. The acting and cinematography are a delight.
If you are a purist, it seems that Emma Thompson or Ang Lee chose to make Edward Ferras (played by Hugh Grant)a bit more sympathetic in the movie than he is in the book. However, I found this to be thoroughly forgivable and not distracting.
This movie sticks closely to the Austen plot, is historically accurate, and has fascinating characters brought to life by extremely talented actors. If this genre of film holds any interest for you, this is a winner!
