Product Description The Tudors presents the rarely dramatized tumultuous early years of King Henry VIII s nearly 40 year omnipotent reign (1509-1547). In addition to his famous female consorts and 20+ year marriage to Catherine of Aragon to the infamous dalliance with Anne Boleyn the series delves in to Henry s most notable political relationship and the deconstruction of the Roman Catholic Church in England.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 097368516045 Manufacturer No: 851604
Amazon.com The Tudors: The Complete First Season may cover the same subject matter as the 1970 BBC series The Six Wives of Henry VIII, but in every other respect it is a different idea of historical drama. Sexy and violent, The Tudors envisions Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) as a young man of both passion and ambition, driven by boundless sexual energy and the desire to establish a legacy early in his monarchy. When he isn't sleeping with any available beauty--heedless of whose daughter or wife a lover might be--he's getting fired up about going to war with France. He is amenable, however, to alternative ideas, including the counsel of his Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill), who wants his king to sign a treaty of universal peace with all of Europe. Henry's fiery temperament endangers such a move, but Wolsey persists in hopes of gaining France's support for his own, possible ascendance to the papacy. His ambitions are not to be, however, and his fortunes go downhill as Henry's desire to wed Ann Boleyn (Natalie Dormer) puts Wolsey in the position of petitioning Rome for a hearing on the legitimacy of Henry's marriage to Queen Katherine. Henry's shrewd alliance with the king of Spain is also testament to his desire to have more influence over European affairs. But his even greater desire for another woman proves an obstacle there, too. Over the course of the ten episodes on The Complete First Season, Henry's confidence grows as a monarch while his self-interest undercuts his better judgement about making a difference to Europe's progress. While the series makes the historical events rich and captivating, it also makes Henry's love life a voyeuristic delight, full of candlelit flesh and romps in the royal bed. Some of the most fascinating characters in the show are those who figure out the link between Henry's libido and his exercise of power--including Boleyn's own father (Nick Dunning), who encourages Ann to keep up the good work. Sheesh. --Tom Keogh

Excellent! July 8, 2008 My wife and I love this series! It is fun, sexy, and lavish. I my opinion, this is one of the best series that has been on television in the past ten years. We just cannot get enough.

THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE WIVES OF KING HENRY VIII SERIES. THIS WAS THE FIRST WIFE AND HOW HE REPLACED HER WITH ANN BOYLIN. I AM REALLY INTO THIS SERIES AND PLAN TO BUY THE SECOND YEAR WHEN IT COMES OUT FOR SALE. THE SECOND YEAR IS WHEN HE WAS WITH ANN. THIS SERIES SHOWS KING HENRY AS A SLIM VERY GOOD LOOKING KING NOT THE HEAVY SET ONE WE SEE IN PAINTINGS. IF YOU ARE INTO THE WIVES OF KING HENRY VIII YOU WILL LIKE THIS CD.The Tudors - The Complete First Season
Historical Accuracy not Needed June 24, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
With respect to the Anglophiles hidden amongst the Amazonian reviewers, please, please, please take The Tudors as actual history with a grain of salt.
Princess "Margaret" married to the Portuguese king? Wrong. Henry FitzRoy (Henry VIII's illegitimate son w/Elizabeth Blount) dying of the sweating sickness at age 3 or 4? Wrong. On a lesser note, ruffs at the court of Henry VIII? Wrong (starch didn't make its appearance until the latter part of the 16th century, during Elizabeth I's reign)! Several things are wrong, wrong, wrong, but I could give a hoot because the superb acting makes it all a moot point.
This is pure, sensual entertainment at its best. Jonathan Rhys Meyers becomes more impressive to me in everything that I've seen him in, but his Henry VIII is a mystery wrapped inside of a riddle boxed in an enigma (to paraphrase) to many people. Isn't "Great Harry" a redhead (or a strawberry blond at least)? Isn't he 6'3? Isn't he built like an NFL linebacker? Although JRM gives a run for the money as the "handsomest prince in Christendom," he holds none of those other attributes. It really doesn't matter since he MAKES the viewer believe that he embodies everything else that King Henry was. He's a very talented actor who has a huge/bright future ahead of him.
About the supporting cast:
Nick Dunning/Sir Thomas Boleyn-A masterful conniver Natalie Dormer/Anne Boleyn-Vixen of the highest order (complimentary) Henry Czerny/Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk-Condescending, commanding presence Henry Cavill/Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk-Beautiful man, lady-crazy Maria Doyle Kennedy/Queen Katherine of Aragon-Dignity personified Sam Neill/Cardinal Thomas Wolsey-Smug, confident, accurate portrayal James Frain/Secretary Thomas Cromwell-Cunning, deceptive, manipulative Callum Blue/Sir Anthony Knivert-Comic relief, member of the "Rat Pack" Gabrielle Anwar/Princess "Margaret"-Too old for the part, but has a sense of overconfidence and insecurity Jeremy Northam/Sir Thomas More-Overly pious, pompous at times, obtuse, spot on characterization
4-stars for the production and costume design, Rhys Meyers and Dormer's obvious chemistry and a strong supporting cast (had to take away 1 star for the season finale-no suicide for Cardinal Wolsey, dramatic though it was).
