fat girls review July 15, 2008 this is a very funny movie. it brings up some serious issues that many people face everyday while in high school. the only part that i was sort of upset with was the ending. i don't want to give it away, but i felt that it could have been a different ending. overall, i would recommend it.
Fat Girls = Depressed Homosexual EMO's? July 8, 2008 Hearing about this movies plot sounded interesting and I thought it was going to be a hilarious movie, but I ended up walking away from it depressed.
If you like the sound of a wining winging gay student who wants to be a Broadway dancer who thinks he is a fat girl trapped inside a mans body, while having an depressing emo friend and an emigrant dork hitting on her throughout the movie, then this one is sure to please you.
Disappointing April 4, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a very disappointing movie. The acting is barely passable, the filming is third rate at best, and the comedy sometimes looses its point.
Ash Christian plays Rodney, the main character, a somewhat overweight high school student who happens to be gay and is looking for his first love. His best friend is a more obese girl called Sabrina, Ashley Fink. Rodney considers himself as a fat girl, just like Sabrina.
There is Rodney's weird family; Sabrina's weird boyfriend, a Cuban refugee adopted by an African-American family; the weird Drama High School Teacher who poses himself as Liza Minnelli singing Broadway tunes in the local gay club; the weird British blond hunk school student (the only other gay kid in the school) who goes out with Rodney to school prom, but he is not interested in Rodney physically. I guess the word weird is stressed in most of the characters of this movie.
I did not like this movie, it is stupid to me. I did not like the fact that Rodney looses his virginity to the school teacher at the end of the movie. And his obese friend is presented as a joke. One good thing, kids in school did not pick on Rodney.
I think Mr. Christian was trying to do too much in this movie, however, he is talented, and the story is not a bad one.
Fun! Good Hearted Indie Film March 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This DVD is a gem! Check it out - has lots to offer those curious filmmakers who love to hear about indie successes. Film was done on less than a $25K production budget - which is a small fraction of most films out there. For the money, lots of good stuff. It'll make you laugh out loud for sure.

Funny and Original
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
"Fat Girls" (Here TV!) is off-beat, original and very funny. It is the story of Rodney Miller, a male high school student who is not your typical student. He loves the theater and he dreams of being a Broadway stara"also not typical of a kid in Texas. No one seems to understand Rodney and he finally finds what he is seeking in his high school drama teacher, Mr. Cox. What makes this movie so good is the dialoguea"it is perfect and the actors are surprisingly good. Ash Christian stars as Rodney in addition to having written the screenplay and directed the movie. This very easily could have been one of those movies that you feel you had seen before but it is surprisingly new. The stereotypes have been eschewed and the character and wit of Rodney are the focus. Here is a character study about growing up gay in a small town. There is pain and humor and the humor is the key--it is magnified but not to the point of the ridiculous. Let me be clear about the title--it is misleading. There is one fat girl in the movie (Ashley Fink and she is great) but the term "fat girls" refers to the gay students and teacher in Rodneya(tm)s school. Even thought the movie is somewhat episodic and uneven, it is very funny. Ash Christian brings heart to the film and he is wonderful, It is also refreshing, for a change, to see a gay movie that is not filled with muscled, handsome hunks but with ordinary looking people (Christian, with his charm grows on you as you watch him). Jonathan Caouette, who made and starred in the wonderful documentary "Tarnation", is Mr. Cox who is an adult "fat girl" and Rodney's kindred spirit. Rodney's mom (Deborah Theaker) has wonderful one-liners and manages to steal every scene she is in. This is a high caliber independent film and one not to be missed. Interestingly shot and well acted with a literate script. It is just a fun film.
