Amazon.com Product Description Blending affordability with productivity power, the HP Pavilion dv4040us notebook PC is a great choice for both business road warriors and multimedia enthusiasts on the go. The 15.4-inch BrightView display looks good even in direct sunlight, and movies and games will look clear thanks to the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (with 128 MB of shared memory). And you'll stay productive with the battery-sipping 1.73 GHz Intel Pentium M (Centrino) processor. This notebook also features a 100 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM, built-in 54g wireless connectivity, dual layer DVD+/-RW drive, and multiformat memory card reader. The Basics - Hard Drive: The 100 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is above average in size, and is befitting of such an entertainment-centric laptop. You'll be able to store a hefty digital audio library.
- Processor: The 1.73 GHz Pentium M (Centrino) Processor 740 is in the middle of the speed spectrum for this processor class (March, 2005). It is well equipped for office productivity software tasks, from complex spreadsheets to databases. The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a large 2 MB L2 cache--which will help speed up your system's performance--and a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB).
- Memory: The 1024 MB (1 GB) of installed RAM is a great start, providing enough power for today's demanding multimedia and business productivity software. For immersive gaming and video editing, you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB) .
- CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the dv4030us multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data.

Screen, Graphcs and Sound The high-definition 15.4-inch WXGA BrightView widescreen display--with 1280 x 800-pixel resolution--has 30 percent more screen information than a 15-inch XGA, providing visibility of two applications side by side for greater productivity and multi-tasking. The BrightView feature provides a 20 percent brighter screen for better definition and 33 percent wider viewing angle for more accurate, off-center viewing when sharing files files. Video and graphics are powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, which provides 128 MB of shared video memory. It also has HP Premium audio and internal stereo speakers. Totally love it December 24, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The dv40404us was my first notebook and I totally love it! I have it since may, 2005 and it never had a problem. I use it for everything, I work with it, I watch movies, play games... Now we bought other notebook because my husband needed one and we chose other HP.
Poor quality and service November 14, 2006 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have owned an HP Pavilion 4000 series notebook for about two years and have sent in for repair four times already. The issues varied from a defective battery, to a defective power supply, to defective system fans and overheating, to locking up unexpectedly. The only consistent factor was the poor customer service I received from HP and the incompetence of the customer support and service outfits for HP.
One of the times, the notebook was returned to me with the HP technician's testing drive installed in it. Another time, the notebook was returned missing all the covers from the bottom (hard drive cover, memory cover, etc.)
This time, the whole computer is missing and the customer support reps do not know the status nor where it is. I have not received assurances from HP that the issue will be resolved anytime soon and all I can get from them is that it is "scheduled" to be shipped to me a week ago.
Extremely poor quality and lack of service make me recommend against purchasing this or any HP notebook.
HP Sucks August 29, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
HP has the WORST customer service of any company of any kind that I have ever dealt with. I have never called without having spent at least one hour on the phone with them before the various extensions in India, none of whom are helpful. And once the service is complete the computer is usually returned with more problems than they were origionally sent with. I would never buy another HP again.
I really like my laptop!! December 6, 2005 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This laptop is very user friendly, and has a lot of unique capabilities. The screen is thin, and wide for a fantastic crisp looking screen display; however, the price is the biggest downfall of this product. (...)
Awesome noteboook!!! September 30, 2005 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
Best in terms of speed, reliability (no freezing) and WiFi access! About the "keys of the keyboard problem"...If you have owned a Toshiba before that, it will feel unusual the first 2-3 times, after that you get used to the feel of the buttons...
But honestly, after a Sony Vaio VGNB 100BD and a Toshiba M35-s405...this notebook is a monster! :)))
