2 out of 5 stars OK sound, poor quality of materials   January 2, 2008
This is one of those products you really don't know what your getting. I found this out after a failure of the Companion 3's. A lightning strike took out the Companion 3's. So I decided to take them apart. Boy, what a eye opener! Being a amateur audiophile since I could read the title on a record album. I was sorely disappointed in the Bass driver which was made of a paper composite and a foam surround. Not what I expected from $250 speakers! The desktop speakers were the same cheap quality. Actually I was surprised considering the Bose do sound pretty good. But for a company who keeps specifications secret and glue's enclosures so you cannot see speaker's. I can only wonder what Bose is trying to do? I have to say from what I have seen of their quality. I don't think I will be buying anything with Bose on it. Unless I can verify I am actually getting something for my money!

3 out of 5 stars Did not live upto expectations   September 15, 2007
Perhaps it was the Bose brand name or the $250 price tag that had my expectations soaring when I bought the Companion 3. I brought it home and couldn't wait to get it hooked up to my computer. 5 minutes later, I had it all set up and found myself drooling at the looks of those tiny satellites on my desktop; this is a thing of beauty - no doubt about that. The puck-like volume control was a pleasure to work, and I loved the touch-sensitive mute button. All fine but what about the feature that really matters - the sound? I have to say I wasn't exactly blown away by it. The lows and highs sounded great - but there wasn't any mids. Rich male voices sounded lifeless and coming from a tiny speaker (which they were). (One of my friends later commented that all male voices sound like Akon). I was convinced that it was just a software equalizer setting that I have gotten wrong. But 30 minutes of tweaking later, I was in a state of sad realization - this product has disappointed me. I'm taking it back - I'm not sure what else to get, I'm still researching.

Pros: A thing of beauty - tiny and very usable.
Cons: Sound - mids are missing!
Bottom-line: Disappointment from Bose.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice !!!   November 11, 2006

The sound is strong & clear. The bass are absolutely fantastic, and if you want to improve them just place the subwoofer 5" far in front of wall, it's when you say Wow!. Satellites are very small, nicely designed and you won't ever understand how something so SMALL sounds that BIG. Volume level was lower than I expected, but the guilty guy was my Toshiba laptop's sound card, so I had to upgrade it with a cool pcmcia Creative Audigy 2 ZS. Now, that's sound !

I use these sound system primary to enjoy karaoke music at my parties with family and friends (lot of people!), this is why it was an important point a higher sound level. So I'm really happy with this investment. It's expensive in front of its competitors, right, but as always it is: if you want things to work perfect you have to pay for it!

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to my system.   October 7, 2006

How much bass do you need?

I have not compared these speakers to others in the price range, but these speakers fill up my study with crisp, clean, satisfying sound I can listen to hour after hour. Bose's sound shaping is very apparent, but the result is pleasing with a full sound field.

I have a more expensive system in the living room with Definitive Technology ProCinema 100's and I don't feel any compulsion to leave the study when I want to crank up Radio Paradise.

System usability is also greatly enhanced with Bose's external volume/mute control.

Build quality also appears to be high. Stick these speakers on a 24" widescreen LCD monitor and you have a very functionaal system.

Note: These speakers are a bit solid for their size. I suggest you buy some industrial strength velcro from Lowes or elsewhere if you plan to use Bose's inccluded L-mounts to attach these to the top of your monitor. 2"x.75" ought to do it,

2 out of 5 stars Nice sound but....   September 23, 2006

....the quality is somewhat questionable. After owning these fine sounding speakers for a little over a year, they quit working. You would think that for this much money, that they would last a little bit longer. And, of course, they are only guaranteed for one year. So buyer beware.
