Product Description Absolute bliss. Pure, moisturizing Savon de Marseille soaps with the regional flowers of lavender, orange, rose and verbena. In the Middle Ages, big blocks of gentle soap were first crafted in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille with olive oil from local groves, marine ash and sea salted water. The quality of these soaps were immediately famous throughout Europe and in 1688 French law declared that only soaps made according to certain ancient methods could bear the important mark Savon de Marseille. Now the most prized of all soaps in the world, our Savon de Marseille is still crafted by hand, in Marseille, just as it has been for hundreds of years. It takes the Maitre de Savon (soapmaster) two weeks to make Marseille Soap. The purest ingredients (mentioned above) are heated for ten days in antique cauldrons. Know-how passed down through the generations will reveal to the soapmaster the right moment to pour the mixture into open pits where it slowly hardens. Cut into cubes and stamped, without machines of any kind, the soaps are then set out to dry in the sun and cool winds. Savon de Marseille (also known as "Marseille Soap") is once again being rediscovered for its extraordinary purity, gentle skin care and ecological value. Savon de Marseille is recommended by dermatologists throughout the world for dry or sensitive skin, eczema and other ailments. In France it has been trusted for generations to cleanse everything from linens to little faces. Marseille Soap is totally biodegradable, requires little packaging and its manufacture is environmentally friendly. Authentic Marseille Soap is stamped with its weight in grams - allowing households to compare prices and plan their inventories. No soap is "greener." In France they are sold piled high on open-air market tables like produce, wrapped in craft paper. Your Savon de Marseille will be delivered without plastic packaging, carefully wrapped in paper stamped with the famous marks to prove its authenticity.

Heavenly, Heavenly, HEAVENLY! April 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Absolutely the best soaps I've ever used. Unbelievable pure lavender / verbena fragrance, soft creamy lather and gently-exfoliating flower petals from the South of France! I love French Soaps' Savon de Marseille with Crushed Flowers.
Each beautiful block is a Masterpiece. March 19, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This isn't just a soap. It's a pure formation of flowers and fragrance that you never want to be without. The block shape reminds one of its pedigree: the famous, centuries-old "Savon de Marseille" French soaps. But then this company (called "French Soaps" simply enough) started adding crushed lavender flowers from the countryside of southern France along with pure lavender fragrance. The result is the most beautiful, rustic, heavenly soap on the planet. As the flowers lightly exfoliate, the olive and palm oils moisturize and nourish. I buy 10 at a time and share them with my closest friends. By the way the verbena and rose petal varieties are just as wonderful. I haven't yet tried the orange flower (might just order them today!).
Huge Block of Soap, Crumbled :-( February 19, 2008 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought two of these soaps, the verbena (which smells lovely) & the orange one (nothin special...). I had resigned myself to using one as a mantel splash of color but tonight I read the reviews and one said they are easy to cut. So here I am with a huge knife in the kitchen and left with one misshapen hunk o f crumbly soap. It is horrible soap. Although I recommend the chunk of verbena in a car if one lives in a desert community, the heat makes the car smell great!! Don't buy these expecting to use them in the tub.
Nice Quality January 14, 2008 This soap leaves my skin feeling very clean, but not tight and dry. The scent, orange flower, smelled more orange and herbal than floral, so I believe men would find the scent appealing. Note that the bar is actually dark orange in color, rather than purple, as pictured. I am anxious to try the company's other soap scents!
One Block Last 3 Months or More -Mild Fragrance-Verbena December 20, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
One block will last 3 mths or longer. This soap was not real fragrant, DOUX soaps are better for fabulous scent that last a long time. Savon De Marseille soaps are made according to strict ancient methods. A blend of olive oil, vegetable oil, alkaline ash, sea plants, fragrance and sea water. Once the blocks are cut they are left to dry outside in the sun.
This soap arrived wrapped in just some loose paper. It is not sealed. Doux French soaps are infused with fragrance and not exposed to air drying to dissipate the scent. They are then shrinked wrapped to preserve the fragrance which is powerful. I gave this Marseille Verbena a 4 star for this reason...lack of potent fragrance.
However everything else about this soap is really good. How many bars of soap last for months? Because of the olive oil it does not dry out your skin. Its purity makes it great for sensitive skin.
