Did you know that painted ladies (the butterflies, that is) taste with their feet and have 10,000 eyes? You and your kids will be fascinated by all you learn about these beautiful creatures with the Butterfly Garden from Insect Lore. The kit comes with a relatively easy-to-assemble observation chamber; supplies for feeding the butterflies (you provide only sugar and water); an informative booklet of clear instructions and butterfly facts; and a certificate for three to five free painted lady caterpillars. The metamorphosis from larva to butterfly takes about three weeks from when you receive the caterpillar larvae (which arrive in a small container with all the nutrients they need). Your children can watch the larvae increase dramatically in size, form chrysalides, and finally emerge into full-fledged painted ladies (it's suggested that they release the butterflies after a few days of observation). This would make a wonderful activity for families with kids of any age, but younger children will need help assembling the observation chamber and reading the instruction booklet. (Note: The manufacturer recommends that butterflies should not be set free in temperatures lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.) --Rachel Radway

 Bug boys birthday present April 20, 2008
This is the only thing my son wanted for his seventh birthday. The caterpillar people let me schedule the delivery so that the caterpillars arrived just a couple of days before his birthday. The are all alive and growing SO fast. He is fascinated with them, and has started a butterfly bush for them. Of course these will chrysalize long before the bush is grown, but I plan to order more caterpillars once these are grown into butterflies and we can have this fun all summer. He is most pleased with this gift, and I am happy that I found this one so much cheaper than the one advertised on TV. It works the same and I saved money. He hasn't noticed the difference. We will enjoy this all summer, thanks!

I purchased the Live Butterfly Garden for my grandson who will be 5 in June. The larvae arrived yesterday and my grandson was so excited. Last night we began the growing process. What an awesome experience for children. Thank you.

I love this kit. Both my kids, ages 9 and 12, love watching the process. It is fun to learn about them and see first hand as the miracle takes place right in front of you. My kids swear the same butterflies come back year after year to our garden. Please understand you do have to pay an extra $3.00 to send away for your caterpillars.

I bought this for my 7 year old son but the whole family are enjoying watching the stages from caterpillar to butterfly. The caterpillars arrived on time and all 5 survived and are now cocoons. The product is exactly as described and excellent value for money.

This is a very exciting toy. We had ordered one in the past for another grandchild and she loved it so much, we re-ordered for our 5 year old granddaughter. She is very happy with it, has ordered her cocoons and is anxiously waiting for the metamorphosis. It's a great toy, and teaches children a lot about the perception of re-birth. I recommend it to everybody. Us older folks enjoy watching this, too.
