Astra-Hammond Aluminum 10612 Louvers for '05-'08 Mustang July 2, 2008 The shipping: I chose the free shipping and it got here the next day!
The packaging: Crushed and opened! Much to my amazement, the louvers were not damaged and all the parts were there, taped to the wrapping on the louvers in their own bag. It appears the box was originally sealed with those big copper staples but the lid was pulled open. On the box it says, "Made in Canada". Maybe customs opened it? Either way you would think UPS would re-secure it. I don't know why anyone uses UPS anyway since every box I get from them has some sort of damage or a foot print on it, but that's another story.
The louvers: They look fantastic but certain elements of the design could have been better. On the edge of each louver that is closest to the window are strips of black foam-rubber that cover the edges & rivets to prevent them from bouncing on the window. Two of these strips were dangling in the packaging but were still sticky and not damaged. I was able to place them where they belonged. Small rubber bumpers would have been better.
Installation: Follow the instructions carefully because once the automotive quality mounting tape touches the window, that's where it stays! I cleaned the window very well and then took extra care to clean the mounting spots on the glass with isopropyl alcohol. I additionally made sure to wipe the area again with a clean cotton towel to remove any of that residue that evaporated alcohol leaves. First you install the top mounts on each side. Next you test fit the 2nd & 3rd set of mounts with them attached to the louver as described in the instructions. It is at this time that an assistant would be helpful in holding the louvers all the way up into the first set of mounts which are more or less "clips" that do not hold them from sliding toward your trunk. An assistant would also be helpful in raising & lowering them for you, so you can concentrate on marking the mounting locations. When you set the louver in the top mounts in preparation for the 2nd & 3rd sets, you will find the louver will give you enough "play" to get your hand underneath the louver to mark where these additional mounts must be placed. They recommend a grease pencil but I used blue painter's masking tape which worked perfectly. (You'll see what I'm talking about when you do it.) VERY IMPORTANT: TEST FIT THE MOUNTS BEFORE YOU STICK THEM TO THE GLASS! But if things go wrong there is a product hotline provided for you. I did not need it but I'm guessing you can get new mounts if you mess up. The final step is to seal around the mounts with silicone to keep water from seeping into the mounting tape. I used clear GE Silicone II "Window & Door" which comes in a small tube. This particular brand claims it will not shrink as opposed to other brands that claim "minimal shrinkage". I waited 24 hours for the tape to cure first. Then I masked the window around the mounts leaving about 1/8 inch of glass exposed around them. I put a bead of silicone around the mounts & used a plastic putty knife to work it against the mount. I then left a neat bead around the perimeter of each mount, smoothed it with my finger, then pulled off the masking tape for a very clean, finished look.
I would say it helps to be at least a little handy to DIY but it's not impossible for anyone. Installation is not as big of a deal as it sounds but you need to take your time and be accurate with the mount placement. In the end, I really love the louvers but I'm going to give it 4 stars for the design flaw earlier mentioned. I don't know who to blame for the box being opened so I won't deduct for that. Hope this write up from my experience helps you.
Astra-Hammond Aluminum 10612 Louvers for '05-'08 Mustang February 8, 2008 Based on prior experience with an Astra-Hammond louver in the '80's and info obtained from a internet forum, I purchased this louver. I wasn't home at the time of delivery or else I would have not accepted the package due to extensive damage to the carton. After taking numerous pictures, I held my breath, opened the box and examined the contents. It appeared that the box had been previously opened and the louver re-wrapped. The louvers were found to have a few areas where the black powder coating had rubbed off due to the packaging damage and bare metal was showing. Additional pictures were taken. Following a call to Astra-Hammond, they stated that I needed to return the louver to the company that I had purchased it from and that they did NOT have a touch-up kit to provide. Since I had considered re-painting the louver to match the car's paint in the event I didn't like the flat-black look, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to try to return it and to fork-out the cash to have it re-painted. Note that I am not putting any blame on Astra-Hammond but on the vendor that shipped it. What's interesting is that there appears to be no info on the carton nor any paperwork that identifies who the supplier was beyond Amazon.com.
Fantastic June 2, 2007 Love the louvers. Look great on the car. Follow the instructions to the "T" and you want have any trouble with them. Great product and cheaper than the rest.
Good but not great May 27, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Firstly the louvers came very fast. But they were missing 2 nuts. A week later after talking to customer service I recieved a whole new pack with different nuts (strange). Anyway the brackets are not engineered as well as they could do..no wonder ppl are losing them. The louvers themselves look good and are sturdy but the thin paint soon revealed some chips b4 I even got them on. Installation went OK; you just have to be very precise with positioning the brackets.
3 and half stars for me.
Astra Hammond Louvers May 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Look great, had them painted to match the cars paint and I couldn't be happier with them. The adhesive tape which is used to apply the brackets didn't stick in one corner but I fixed that with adhesive glue. The only downside is these are not hinged so in order to clean under them you have to unscrew all four corners. Overall, great product and fast delivery!
