Product Description Brother MFC-9840CDW Color Laser Printer The MFC-9840CDW includes automatic duplex (two-sided) printing, copying, scanning and faxing. This feature can help reduce paper costs, while giving you the ability to create professional twosided documents for reports, proposals and other materials, quickly and easily. Enhanced scan-to-FTP-server features Scan documents and images and post them to FTP sites directly through your network-connected all-in-one. It's ideal if you often post files to FTP sites for easy retrieval and download by permitted users inside your firm, perhaps in remote locations, or by corporate partners, such as clients, vendors, agents and others. Multiple FTP server profiles can store specific sites and folder locations, access codes, and scanning preferences for your frequently used FTP locations, cutting time spent and potential errors. Secure function lock Walk-up copying, scanning, and faxing are all great conveniences. However, you may want to limit access to select features, especially if you are handling confidential records and data, or to restrict access to printing to keep your operating costs down. So the MFC-9840CDW provides the ability for your administrator to set various levels of password-protected access to certain features, for each of up to 25 different users per machine. Walk-up access to LDAP network address books Save time and reduce errors with instant direct access through your network connected MFC-9840CDW to a virt

Ourstanding value July 24, 2008 When one considers the cost of a commercial copier, this shows it's value. It is as quick as reported, makes excellent copies and prints fine reports. There is some page curl but this has not been a reason not to buy this. If you are doing alot of commercial fliers, portfolios etc, you might find this curl to be annoying. Photos turn out more than adequate for the average consumer. I did not notice any real difference between this and an ink jet on photo paper but I have an untrained eye in this area. If you do a high amount of printing, the cost per page including the drum replacement and cost of the high yield cartridges, actually makes this less expensive to use than an ink jet. It is easy to set up wireless, even on a secure network. The manual is simple to follow.
Returning my first Brother printer purchase in 2 days! Back to reliable HP which I used for 20 years. July 22, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Brother MFC-9840cdw Color Laser Multi-Function Center with Wireless Interface and Duplex does not print web pages or emails with graphics. It superimposes words over images, truncates images, omits images, and adds numerous line feeds which leads to occasionally 14 pages being printed instead of 2. I tried the most basic pages - my.yahoo.com, www.bbc.com. I'm connected using the wireless interface. I haven't tried using the USB interface since I purchased it for wireless functionality.
When I called customer service they were very unprofessional and defensive. Both the first representative and the supervisor were not well trained in any troubleshooting skills other than repeating over and over again that Brother does not print Web pages unless they were "printer friendly". I was very surprised to hear this given that any HP printer I've purchased over the last 20 years printed any input provided flawlessly. They were unable to tell me how to find out the driver version and download the latest versions. The sad part was they were perfectly fine with me returning the printer. Brother customer service really needs to look into this.
Lousy Company July 16, 2008 The Brother MFC9840CDW has poor quality printing, will not properly print Avery labels and requires access to the rear to change a setting for printing envelopes...a major inconvenience.
Brother will not do anything about a defective design and/or manufacture.
Don't replace your toner cartridges too early!! June 30, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The quality and functionality of this Multi-Function Center has been accurately noted as being outstanding by the numerous 5-star reviews already posted, and I would second every one of them. The only negative I would have with this unit (and its a minor one) is the cost of the toner cartridges, but never having owned a laser printer before, it maybe par for the course.
However, my main purpose in writing this review is let everyone in on a little secret I discovered. Depending on how long you've had your unit, eventually a "low toner" warning is issued stating something like it's time to get a replacement cartridge ready. Eventually if you don't replace the cartridge, the unit stops printing altogether. Anyway, besides the price of the a new cartridges (I was able to find the high yield color ones for about $90 online), it just seemed like there was still a decent amount of toner remaining in the old cartridges and I definitely wasn't seeing any degradation in print quality, so I did a little investigating on the internet and found this very useful website (http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/laser/39806#48) where folks have realized that after the "low toner" warning comes on, you still have a good 25% cartridge life remaining! Well, I tried it and it worked like a charm, so now I have a complete stock of new cartridges sitting on the shelf until I decide I need to replace them rather than the unit making the decision for me. But again, this is a MINOR complaint for an otherwise outstanding printer/faxer/copier unit with no other visible flaws!
Does everything well, but is heavy June 21, 2008 Had this for two weeks. Installation on 4 PCs was smooth (Win XP, Linux). Immediately handled double-sided faxing (send and receive) without fuss, including receiving using 'distinctive ring' option (2nd number on single phone line into home business) in New Zealand (Telecom's Faxability service).
Printing and copying quality as expected. No paper jams yet.
Extreme paper curl mentioned in a couple of other reviews not a problem here.
Is surprisingly heavy to move; you may need two people. Also it is a large square shape and wouldn't fit well in places with tight access e.g. narrow stairways (luckily we had an outside door near the office, otherwise we might not have been able to get the printer in).
