Album Description The landmark musical's first-ever Broadway revival! The curtain rang down on Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific in 1954 after five years of extraordinary acclaim and countless awards including nine Tonys and a Pulitzer. Based on James Michener's Pulitzer Prize winning book Tales of the South Pacific, the musical is set on a tropical island during World War II and tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples - U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Marine Joe Cable and a young local native girl Liat - and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score's songs include such musical theater classics as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Bali Ha'i," "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "A Wonderful Guy."

Great revival of a great musical July 24, 2008 South Pacific is widely considered one of the all-time greatest musicals, and yet, somewhat inexplicably, it had never received, until now, the revival it deserved. Add the fact that recording technology has vastly improved since the original cast was recorded in 1949, and this CD is a must-have in any Broadway musical collection, indeed, any music library. This show well deserved it's Tony as Best Musical Revival. I couldn't help but wonder if the show that won Best New Musical, "In the Heights", would, like South Pacific, be re-vivable 60 years after it's original production.
Outstanding! July 24, 2008 You can't beat Rodgers and Hammerstein! Each song is a treasure. The melodies and lyrics are so touching and this cast does a great job bringing them to life again. Thank you.
Fantastic production, great acting and singing. July 21, 2008 Just saw this production at Lincoln Center and this recording captures and recreates what I saw perfectly. This revival of South Pacific is wonderful. See it while the original revival cast is still together - they are a phenomenal ensemble.
What A Broadway Musical Is !!!!! July 19, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This show still puts the likes of Spring Awakening, Young Frankenstein, In The Heights and nearly every other show of the past couple of years, to shame. After nearly 60 yrs!!! In 60 more years will anyone remember any of the garbage from Spring Awakening? A revival of Passing Strange on Broadway? I doubt it.
Got mom's thumbs up July 19, 2008 I purchased this as a surprise gift for my mom after we had met for a family member's bar mitzvah. She and another family member excitedly talked about the revival, as my mom loves the play and we even have personal history with it, with my honorary uncle haved originally played Lt. Billis on Broadway (as had I in school!).
I've never heard the thing but it made my mom happy enough to call immediately and tell me that she was on her tenth listen that day. Can't get a better review than that! I'll consider it a success... :)
