Michael Mcdonald \ Motown distant lover November 5, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Michael McDonald has proved himself on this song. His own touch just made the song so moving and in many ways better than the original by Marvin Gaye. I have always loved his music from way back with the Doobies. Michael has really out done himself on this entire cd. With the sexy sax, strong bass, his smooth and soft touches of the piano and his raspy yet sexy voice really makes this motown cd his very own. He has proved that he has the voice to sing any type of music and make it a hit....
Good comeback CD for Michael McDonald July 18, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Although I can think of other Motown songs that I would have substituted for some of the songs on this CD, the more I listen to this the more I appreciate what Michael McD has done. "I Heard it Through the Grapevine", "I Believe (When I Fall in Love)", "All in Love is Fair", "I Want You" and "Distant Lover" are excellent versions that Mike has given his own special touch. The gem of the CD though is "Too High" (only found on the import CD as a bonus track). This is far and away the best track on the disc. It's a very good CD and will bring back many fond memories of these great songs of yesteryear. I hope that it's very successful and that Mike decides to do Motown #2 and include: I Can't Help Myself; I'll Be Doggone; Hitch Hike; Pretty Little Baby; Come See About Me; When the Lovelight Starts Shining...; What's Going On; Shake Me, Wake Me (When it's over..) and others.... This CD is worth your money!
Michael McDonald is phenomenal on Motown June 25, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Please don't believe that "a music fan" would know better than McDonald himself which songs he should chose to sing. This is a really wonderful, beautiful cd! NPR's Bob Edwards recently did an interview with McDonald on Motown (broadcasted on 6/24). Check out ... to read up and listen to McDonald playing away some of the Motown songs in the NPR studio. It's fantastic stuff. Michael McDonald has one of the most beautiful voices of all time. This is a great cd to chill out with and musically spoken it is absolutely sound. Of course everything depends on personal taste, but people who like soul/jazz (and maybe have never heard Michael before), give it a try! You will not be disappointed.
Pretty Good Set June 12, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Michael Mcdonald still has the Chops at knocking out Songs. His Voice works well with most of the songs here.He adds His Own touch to many of the tracks here.He has never gotten that One Solo Album to Fully Showcase His whole Range.but this Album comes pretty close at sealing the Deal.He still has One of the Baddest Flows in the Whole Industry still to me.
Right On!! May 30, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The man did it again!! He captures Motown like no other. I only wish this could have been a two-disc collaboration. McD just gets better as the years pass.
