Amazon.com Marking his 40th anniversary in the music business, veteran Steve Winwood returns from the six-year hiatus he undertook after 1997's disappointing Junction Seven with this debut release for his own Wincraft Music label. If it foregoes the slick chart fodder that elevated Winwood's career expectations to somewhere just south of the stratosphere for much of the '80s, it also returns him to the warm, more band-oriented musical setting he thrived in from his days as the Spencer Davis Group's teen wunderkind and subsequent rewarding stints in Blind Faith and Traffic. More concerned with human connections, texture, and potent rhythmic contexts than pop hooks, Winwood evokes much of the latter band's jazz and funk sensibilities to good effect, often working with a diverse group of songwriting collaborators to wrap his distinctive blue-eyed soul in the sort of rich Latin and Caribbean influences familiar to fans of Santana. Veteran jazz guitarist and current Winwood bandmate/songwriting collaborator Jose Neto lights an evocative gypsy fire beneath "Cigano," "Domingo Morning," and the slow-burning "Silvia," while previous Winwood sideman Anthony Crawford shares songwriting credits on the Marvin Gaye grooves of "Final Hour" and the ebullient "Walking On." Brit popster William Topley stirs his Stax-meets-Jamaican seasoning into Winwood's B-3-powered stew on "Phoenix Rising" while Winwood's wife Eugenia shares writing duties on "Now That You're Alive, "Bully," and the beautiful, wistful "Horizon." --Jerry McCulley
Album Description Steve Winwood, one of the most respected & innovative talents in the music world, marks his 40th anniversary making music with the launch of his record label Wincraft Music, a tour of the United States & a CD, About Time. Known for his work with Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith & as a solo artist, Winwood set out to craft a fresh, contemporary album that would combine rock 'n' roll & world music. Winwood centers the album's sound around the Hammond B-3 organ. Working closely with guitarist Jose Neto (Airto Moreira & Flora Purim) & drummer Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Santana, Traffic), About Time marks the first time in 27 years that Winwood recorded live without the use of multiple tracks or recording loops. 2003.

Back to basics October 26, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This 2003 album from Steve Winwood is a return to his roots in terms of the sound and the playing. Essentially the band consists of just Winwood on Vocals and Hammond Organ plus Jose Pires de Almeida Neto on Guitar and Walfredo Reyes Jr on drums; and thats it. On a couple of tracks there is some Flute or Saxophone, but really its kept simple.
The key thing is Steve Winwood's voice still sounds as strong as ever and the Hammond Organ is great. If the album has any weakness it is perhaps that it could have done with a few more memorable songs. However 'Cigano (For the Gypsies)' and 'Horizon' show that Winwood can still write good material.
Its a fine album and the best thing the man has done for a long time.
This is great music July 19, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Here's why I did not award this great recording FIVE stars: There are no incredibly unforgettable moments. Steve's classic solo recordings - BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE, for instance - have surprises everywhere. The drum intro to "Higher Love," the guest voices on the title track, and so on. This particular album has everything EXCEPT that extra pinch of substance we refer to as genius. It's a very good album, though, every song is good. You should add it to your collection, especially if you admire Steve's other stuff. It is different and solid.

This album brings me back to when you could buy an album and the songs were longer than 3 minutes each on it. Nowadays if the songs go over 3 minutes it's too long for the general publics' attention span can handle. If you like great musicianship and lyrics then this album is for you. It's hard to believe this is only 3 guys playing. Steve Winwood is as always great ! Buy it if you're a fan.
A Genius At Work! July 19, 2005 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Since he was the star performer in the Spencer Davis Group way back in the 60's, Steve Winwood has always managed to amaze and delight me in his musical genius and style. He is such a virtuoso yet with the flare necessary to allow him to adapt to any type of music style, whether it be hard rock, jazz, Latin or any combination thereof. With the release of 'About Time' Steve has yet again laid out for us a masterful design and performance in every single tune on this CD! My particular favorites are 'Different Light','Cigano', 'Domingo Morning' and the live version of 'Mr Fantasy'. The later of these is included on the Imported version along with live versions of 'Why Can't We Live Together' and 'Voodoo Child' and well worth the addition few dollars. But not a single tune is not worth playing over and over again! What genius. This time with Latin flavor and lots of it. I had the pure pleasure if sitting row 5 center stage at his recent concent in Danbury, Ct and he was amazing. The group was tight and the music flowed from one masterpiece to the next. And generously. Don't miss this recording of our own modern day Mozart. Steve, come back with more, very soon!!!
Stevie's B3 July 7, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
"About Time" is one fantastic CD, highlighting what is best about Steve Winwood: great vocals, outstanding music supported by talented musicians around him, innovative jams, and the unique sound of the Hammond B3 and Leslie "going round and round". I am so happy that Steve has returned to exclusively playing the best instrument and sound in music: the B3..and, this musical collection reminds us all of how talented a keyboard player he is. The song selection is outstanding, and for many reasons can be played over and over again, especially "Cigano", "Different Light", and, on the bonus CD "Voodoo Chile". "Dear Mr. Fantasy", live, really reminds us of his continued strong vocals as well as guitar playing that ranks at the top among the best. But, that constant presence of the organ and leslie sound in every cut makes this CD, to me, the best he has ever produced. I only hope that Steve and his current strong, talented line-up contine to play together and produce more CD's for all of us to enjoy. (I saw this band live in Chicago last weekend..what a show... topping off the concert with an encore of "Crossroads" and "Gimme Some Lovin'.) I hope "About Time" is the first of many more Cd's to come from the great Hall of Famer, Steve Winwood.
