Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
"A PASSION FOR DISCIPLINE" by Janet "It's the idea that unifies the songs on this record. As a concept, and even a lifestyle, discipline goes extremely deep. It can be applied to so much about ourselves. In my case,I see it as one of defining aspects of my character. Discipline was there for me from the start. But it was not until this record that I began to understand its full meaning. "In putting Discipline out front -- as both the title of the album and title of a song about sexual surrender -- I wanted to announce that I was venturing into new creative waters. That meant working with producers like Jermaine Dupri, Rodney Jerkins, and Ne-Yo, whose songs spoke to the immediacy of my emotions. Like all my records, this one, whether intentional or not, has autobiographical roots. It's difficult for me to work any other way. I don't feel it, if I don't believe it, I can't sing it.

"So Discipline, as a storyline, begins in my childhood which someone could see as a classic study in discipline. Discipline was part of a family culture that I absorbed. I was born with it.

"I also believe that discipline has given me the confidence to jump out of the nest. When L.A. Reid, Chairman of Island Def Jam, and I discussed co-executive producing this record, we both agreed that the feeling had to adventuresome and fresh. I was interested in exploring musical scenarios--some exotic, many erotic, but all deeply emotional. "I wanted to push the envelope. And I'm glad that Discipline, both as a song and an album, does just that."

1 out of 5 stars Time to rework this tired, tired formula....   August 20, 2008
After I saw in the paper today that Janet was launching a lingerie line, I was just irritated enough to come here to write a review of "Discipline". Too late--Terry Mesnard has just about taken every word out of my mouth. I would add to what he wrote that Janet was at her best when she was addressing social issues and laying down fierce, hard tracks. With "Janet" she shed her clothes and inhibitions--bravo for you Ms. Jackson! Then "The Velvet Rope" took that a step further and I was wowed by the funk party she threw. Since then I've felt that she has gone the way of Mariah Carey in the "make the world my gynecologist" department. Pretty much every song has to have that "I Feel Love" vibe to it. Ok Janet, we get it, you're sexually liberated--MOVE ON! Say what you will about Madonna--and Janet did have unkind words to say about Madonna's sexually explicit material--but Madonna did at least have a point to make with all of her sexually in-your-face moments. Janet and Mariah are just sexual in the "look at me, I'm a butterfly, moth, whatever--dancing in the flames of love, making shadows on the wall...la, la, la!" Ok--we get your point--NEXT!
There might be a reason she's been on such a slippery slope with her career for the last several years--it all sounds and looks like rehash. Doesn't she have anything to say about "the state of the world today" anymore...or is sex the only thing that's on her mind? And then there are all of those lip-synched performances, which really irritate me when you've paid the purchase price to see a show. Having a little help is one thing, but when your mouth doesn't even move with the sound--please!
I haven't given up on her, but she better get a clue if she's ever to be relevant again. I know the girl still has a slammin' album in her somewhere, but this one ain't a workin'!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Janet, i just love you   August 18, 2008
Ok so i usually wait a bit until i write a rewiew. I bought this CD the day it came out, and all i can say is that it's my favourite Album that came out this year so far. I still listen to it almost everyday without skiping any songs and i just simply love it.

Now i decided to write a review to sort some things out... as i'm reading horrible reviews i tend to think that the aproach of an audience to an album is so much related to the sales results... this album has been fastly forgotten yes, but of course, i mean, if your record company drops you after two weeks of your album release, who's gonna make good numbers? I just can't understand how many artists out there are doing so great with crappy albums while DISCIPLINE, which is hot, is not doing well. Well, i actually do. With no support from the media, you have nothing to do.

I just wanna recomend everyone to get this CD, cause simply what you'll purchase is GOOD QUALITY MUSIC.

Listen to Can't B Good by the way... it's my favourite track

3 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson - Discipline 5.5/10   August 10, 2008
Ah, the Jackson family. Whether it is Michael entertaining youngsters with wine and roofies or Janet showing off her body at the Super Bowl, they can always be counted on to deliver fresh, legal music. While Janet's last two albums had many thinking she had lost her pop touch, Discipline throws her back into the club with a number of righteous jams and a few duds.

First single "Feedback" opens with its namesake before dropping back to a steel-drum rhythm and Janet's seductive, Michael-esque voice telling the listener that "tonight my body's an exhibition baby / don't be scared to touch it / so come and get it babe." Hey, no one ever said Jackson was a lyrical genius, but the production on the song by D'Mile and Darkchild is irresistibly danceable.

Not all of the songs on the album are as club-ready, such as the boring "Rock With U" and the embarrassing ballad "Can't B Good." Jackson's inexplicable decision to include a number of interludes where she talks to a robot or says unintentionally comedic nuggets like "four words: love, faith, hope, destiny" stunt the album's momentum.

Nevertheless, Discipline's strong production is perfectly tailored for the dance floor and will no doubt put the Jackson name back on the airwaves.

1 out of 5 stars self-titled CD was her last good one   August 8, 2008

The only thing that resembles anything close to a real song on Discipline is "Can't Be Good," which is getting heavy play on urban radio. Other than that, it's a bunch of studio-manufactured, computerized techno-crap.

2 out of 5 stars She can do better   August 3, 2008
Janet Jackson has been in the limelight her entire life from her young days as an actress and sister of Jackson 5 to her own unique and monumental music career. She is legend.
However, her album Discipline fails to live up to expectations. I'm not saying it's not a good album but by Janet Jackson standards it seems lackluster. I imagine for new fans this album is hotcakes extra syrup. With songs like Rock With U, LUV, Rollercoaster, Can't B Good, Curtains, Whats Ur Name, and Discipline this album could have done better than what it did. But the people she was trying to cater to already have their "icons" i.e. Rihanna & Ciara among others, so it was really no room for Janet. Even with those aforementioned songs though the other songs are on the terrible side and the skits are useless as most skits usually are. 7 songs out of 22 including skits is not a good ratio. I just can't put my stamp of approval on this album. Janet Jackson can do better than this and we all know this.
