I Don't Ski, but I Like Skiing Magazine May 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Skiing magazine is a publication dedicated to skiing and its enjoyment. This magazine offers the skiing fan a host of useful tips and suggestions on everything from equipment purchasing to keeping safe on a snowy mountain.
Skiing is not an activity that interests me in any way, so it might seem very peculiar that I would have any interest in a magazine like Skiing. But the main reason I like Skiing magazine is for the pictures. Each issue offers plenty of postcard photos of snow- capped mountains and other picturesque settings. It is even common to find a special section near the end of each issue with nothing but pictures of snowy terrain. These splendid photos make the magazine enjoyable for anyone.
Besides the pictures, the other part of skiing magazine I enjoy is the occasional featured article on adventure travel. I love to travel, so I often become absorbed in these featured articles. They often have a story to tell, with skiers not only navigating slopes, but also climbing mountain peaks in the process and sharing their unique experiences along the way.
Aside from the adventure travel and the photos, there is little else in Skiing Magazine that interests me, but there is plenty here for the skiing enthusiast. Get Schooled, for example, offers educational tips to help you make the most of your skiing hobby. Outfitter helps the reader make better buying decisions and it is complete with reviews of different equipment and clothing. There is also a handy summary list in the back of each issue complete with a listing of advertisers and the web sites and phone numbers to make contacts.
Overall, Skiing is a good magazine about this popular winter activity and it makes a good choice of gift subscriptions for those who love to hit the slopes. Judging this magazine as objectively as possible, it does have a few flaws, like the emphasis on very expensive equipment, the brief explanations of skiing tips, and the fact that it is issued only seven times per year. But Skiing does have an equal number of good points, like the enticing photographs and the featured articles on adventure ski travel. It adds up to a magazine that rates average or slightly better, and it's a publication that most any lover of the sport will find to his/her liking.
Better than Ski, Not as good as Powder January 10, 2007 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is the middling brother of the 3 major ski publications. Ski is totally geared towards the jetset of skiers looking to eat and stay at 5 star resorts. Powder is really geared towards the hard core ski bum and Skiing falls somewhere in the middle. The highlight of Skiing is their yearly gear review which is probably the best single resource for someone looking to pick up new boards in the fall. Good coverage of North American resorts and vacations, however it falls a bit short in capturing my attention for imagination when it comes to living the sport.
Disappointed long-time subscriber December 23, 2006 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have subscribed to Skiing magazine for a few years, but recently it has taken a turn toward raunchy. Do I really want to read an article titled "a real defecation storm" about "a simple dump does terribly wrong in Maine"?? If I wanted to read about toilet humor I would subscribe to Mad magazine!
Fun stories and skier info January 6, 2003 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Skiing magazine mixes interesting and fun stories of skiing adventures with a lot of good information on gear, resorts, etc. The mag gives info on different ski areas in N. America & around the world - great for those that like to plan ski adventures away from home like me. It provides the latest in ski gear and new technology available for skiers of all abilities - great for those looking to upgrade their outdated gear. Every issue also has one article or another following some ski nut or a team of ski nuts around the world on their latest adventure, from Alaska glaciers to Rocky Mtn. backcountry. Keeps me excited about skiing..even during the off season.
Good overall August 24, 2002 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Good magazine if you're looking for articles on equipment on or coming on the market that has been well tested and rated price, ability level etc. Good pieces on preventing injuries and getting and staying fit, since skiing means you better have strong legs and upper body control.
