Amazon.com Review These knives are as adept at cutting as they are attractive and can set up a mod kitchen to be functional as well as stylish. The set includes an 8-inch chef's knife--which works equally as well for slicing paper-thin rounds of carrots as it does for chopping a huge butternut squash into chunks; an 8-inch slicer for carving poultry or meat; a 5-inch chef's/utility knife for smaller tasks--such as mincing garlic or ginger; and a 3-1/2-inch parer for peeling fruits or halving grapes. All knives fit into a hardwood block with modern stainless-steel accents along with a coarse-grit 9-inch sharpening steel for keeping knife edges honed and a pair of 8-inch shears for cutting up a chicken or opening food packaging. These Ultra Edge knives have heavy-gauge precision taper-ground blades for precise slicing and chopping. They are constructed of high-carbon Molybdenum steel, a material with a Rockwell hardness of 56. It maintains a knife's razor-sharp edge longer before requiring professional sharpening. A high chromium content in these knives provides the highest level of protection from rusting, staining, and corrosion. Handles are made of 18/8 stainless steel with a slip-proof satin finish, and are ergonomically-designed for a comfortable grip. Hollow handles also make the knives extremely lightweight--which Cuisinart touts provides better control and balance. However, chefs who are used to a more weighted handle may find that the knives feel a bit less substantial in the hand. Cuisinart cutlery is guaranteed under a lifetime warranty. --Cristina VaamondeWhat's in the Box 8-inch chef knife, 8-inch slicer, 5-inch chef/utility knife, 3-1/2-inch parer, 9-inch sharpening steel, 8-inch all-purpose household shears, 8-slot hardwood knife block

excellent knife, but it broke when chopping garlic! December 12, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is true to my title. I love the Cuisinart knifes, I bought this set as it was on a sale and loved it! But unfortunately, sharp as they come, they are not strong. I was chopping garlic one days and the knife just broke into half. Worse, I've sent the knife for a replacement and it's been over a month, I have yet to receive the replacement!!
I am giving 2/5 because an unreliable knife and bad customer service doesn't make anything sharp worth it's money.
Lightweight and sharp July 27, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this set because I want a nice set that had the minimum basics at a fair price. I find that these knives are very light which is a little awkward for my preference, but I'm not a professional chef. I also found it scary to use, because they are extremely sharp. I was a little disappointed to find that there was an extra slot which made the set appear incomplete. I purchased an extra utility knife to fix that- but that was added cost that I didn't expect after paying for the set. My guest have all commented how SHARP these knives are when they use them. All in all, these knives do the job for me and I've had them for about a year and haven't had any problems. I would recommend to purchase these if you are looking for a very sharp set.

I don't know how Cuisnart can say these knives retail for $200.00. They looked and felt cheap. I returned them without using. I felt they were hyped beyond what they really were.
Very elegant set May 17, 2005 6 out of 15 found this review helpful
I like this very much. I do not need too many knives which is the case with most knife sets. The knifes feel good in hand and good to cut with. I really like the look of this set. Only complaint is one slot of the holder is left empty. They should have filled that too for a complate look.
