5 out of 5 stars Kitchenaid burr grinder   August 21, 2008
This is a real professional model. I had a Capresso that crapped out after trying to make 2 grinds. I think I could grind all day with the Kitchenaid and not have a problem. A real thumbs up for this grinder.

5 out of 5 stars Great for espresso   August 15, 2008
I read most of the reviews on Amazon about how this machine was not capable of producing fine enough grinds for espresso. This made me very reluctant to purchase it, but having other features I liked I thought I would give it a try. This thing out of the box is capable of producing a super fine grind, the finest setting actually was too fine for my espresso machine and clogged it. And on top of that I can still tweak it to make the grind finer if needed by adjusting the machine. Also people complained about the glass being thin on the vessel that catches the grinds. Sure it's thin, but by no means is it going to crack when I squeeze it, I would relate it to being a little thicker than a wine glass. If you dropped it I would bet it would break, but in normal use treating it with respect, you will be fine.

Long story short, I bought this strictly to perform an espresso grind (rarely drink brewed coffee) and it performs beautifully. I don't know why others have had problems, maybe they didn't read the manual right. All I can say is fret not, it is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Works well, some minor issues   August 13, 2008

Pro - consistent grind, very little dust buildup, easy cleanup, looks good!

Con - Nickel Pearl does not match the nickel pearl of our KitchenAid coffee maker. Fresh beans will not always drop without jiggling unit. Grind setting dial works it's way loose and must be checked after every use. Would only recommend to heavy coffee drinkers due to price.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended Highly   August 4, 2008
I have been very pleased with the performance of my Kitchenaid Burr Grinder. Operation is as simple as it gets and the results are perfect. I make coffee in a variety of ways: drip, press and espresso. The ease of changing size of the grind is an excellent feature. I'd recommend this for anyone interested in fresh ground coffee but particularly for those wanting an assortment of grind sizes.

5 out of 5 stars A coffee mill that won't wake the dead   July 31, 2008
I bought this to replace a coffee mill which served me well for years and still works, but sounds like a buzz saw when grinding coffee. It's a problem I've had with every coffee mill I've ever owned. I'm pleased to say that this has solved that problem completely.

Here are a few quick takes on what I like a lot about it:

- Quiet (not silent, but very quiet for a coffee mill)
- Uniform grind (especially important for espresso)
- Quick (I haven't timed it, but it's much faster than any other coffee mill I've used)
- Makes very little mess
- Build quality and appearance

This coffee mill is quiet. At least it's the quietest one I've ever used. Most coffee mills make a loud screeching, grinding noise. With this one, it's a quiet whir and rumble. It sounds like a small version of the heavy-duty grinders you'll find in the coffee aisle at a supermarket.
Besides being good looking, it's fast and makes a very uniform grind. I regularly make both espresso and drip coffee. It grinds the beans to a perfect consistency for each. There is a substantial range of grind settings suitable for all methods of coffee making. It can also be disassembled and re-adjusted to provide settings that are finer or more coarse than the factory adjusted settings. I've not found a need change or adjust it, but the instructions to do so are in the manual, so I'm assuming it's easy enough for a typical owner to do. While I'm on the subject, the manual is clear, well written and extensively illustrated.
There is very little mess to clean up when you grind the beans. The low RPM motor and glass bin helps reduce the static cling of the ground coffee and a gentle tap will dislodge all of it when you empty the bin. The few stray grounds that end up on the counter when you remove the bin can easily be wiped up. There is no such thing as a mess-free coffee mill, but this one comes close.
I have some nitpicks. A few beans and bean fragments always get stuck in the hopper. They're easy to push out, but it's a minor nuisance and something that could probably be solved with a minor design modification. I wish there was a timed grind option. If you grind just enough coffee for one pot at a time, which is what I normally do, you need to keep an eye on the mill because it's fast and you'll end up with a lot more ground coffee than you need before you know it (assuming you have a full or nearly full hopper). I keep a container handy for excess ground coffee. Those are my only complaints, and they are very minor.
This is one of those rare appliances that actually exceeds my expectations. I just wanted a coffee mill that didn't make a loud racket (I'm the first one out of bed in the morning). It's not only quieter than I was expecting, I get a perfect grind for every type of coffee and it looks really sharp sitting on the counter! As with other KitchenAid Pro Line appliances, the build quality is beyond reproach. There are no flimsy parts. It comes with an excellent warranty and customer service. I can't imagine finding a better overall value regardless of price.
