Works well enough, but an ELECTRIC wine opener? Really?? July 6, 2008 I bought one of these at Costco on a whim (and because it was cheap), but after using it about three or four times times, the novelty wore off. Having this thing sitting on my counter, plugged in, wasting energy for no reason -- it just grated on me. So back it went.
I imagine the people who swear by these would be fascinated by the electric martini shaker, too. (I'm not kidding: Waring Pro WM007 Professional Electric Martini Maker.) You know, because you're just TOO IMPORTANT and your life is TOO BUSY and TOO HARASSED for you to have to actually shake your own martinis or exert a tiny scrap of effort to crack open a bottle of Pinot Noir, so don't you DESERVE to take it easy and have these energy-sucking machines do all that horrible work for you?! Imagine all the valuable time you'll save with this convenient thing sitting on your counter... time you can spend on the more important things in your life! (Cut to soft-focus shot of dad playing and laughing with kids in the backyard.)
My little "rabbit" wine opener (Metrokane Rabbit Wine Opener Gift Set, Silver) does a considerably faster job of opening wine. Now, mind you, I actually DO have to move a lever back and forth one entire time, and I also have to hold the handles and squeeze them, so it's a huge, epic pain...*sigh*... but it works every time and it doesn't sit there sucking down electricity during the 99.968% of the time it's not being used. I only occasionally have to sit down and rest from the exhaustion of uncorking a bottle of wine when using this primitive manual device, so I guess it's not that bad.
Things like this on the market absolutely drive home the fact that our actual needs in American life are being met so utterly and completely, that we feel compelled to buy "electric wine openers." The electric martini shaker just leaves me with my mouth hanging open... I honestly can't even comment.
This wine opener is not a BAD product, honestly... it works reasonably well, and that's why it got 3 stars from me. It's just a totally needless and wasteful product. What's next, a plug-in rechargeable electric Chap-Stik applier?
Oster wine opener July 3, 2008 Gave as a gift and the recipient loved it. Will keep in mind to give as a gift again to any wine lover.
electric wine opener June 23, 2008 I saw this item at a friend's home so I ordered 6 of them for family and friends. It is so easy to use and great for those who have problems using wine openers manually. I LOVE IT!
Bought as a Gift, Then I Became Jealous of the Recipient! June 22, 2008 A waiter's corkscrew is a thing of beauty. It's economical design is both sleek and, dare I say it, sexy! No switches, no buttons. It has a built in knife blade to cut the foil and the handle can be decorated in wood, metal or some type of exotic material. It's a practical toy that a guy can really get in to.
So why did I buy this gadget? A large, somewhat clunky device that needs to be charged up before one can use it. Well... not everyone likes using a waiter's corkscrew. It fact, some find it difficult to use. It's all too easy to break the cork in two (with lots of cork-stuff floating in your wine) if you do not use just the right technique.
I bought this for a special friend who had trouble using all of the other wine openers that I bought her. She LOVED this one. It is the only opener that she will use now. I tried it several times and still stuck to my trusty waiter's. Then we had a party (actually an Irish wake) and I had to open dozens of bottles of wine. I used her Oster and I decided that I needed one for myself, but only for emergencies.
Laguiole Corkscrew Redwood with Case
better than sliced bread June 21, 2008 What a fantastic invention! The human that produced this modern marvel deserves a life time supply of the best wines. This is the greatest little gadget to come along in years. I found it by accident on Amazon and thought it would be a fun little gag gift for my husband. Little did I know what a winner it would be. It is easy to use. The design is sleek, modern and is an instant conversation piece. We love it. Recommend it for that hard to please person on your gift list and its a number one gift for yourself. Get it, you won't be disappointed, -- unless you don't drink wine.
