3 out of 5 stars Average Artificial Tree, No More   December 29, 2007

First of all, if Amazon ever sells this tree again, do not believe the hype that this tree retails for $650. It was on clearance for $69.99 plus 1 cent shipping, and it is worth that, but this tree could not be mistaken for a high price artificial tree. Here is why:

1. This is not a thickly branched tree when unpacked. All of the branches will still have to be unfolded and fluffed up by hand, but even when that's done, the interior section is fairly bare, as my old tree was. This in itself makes the tree look artificial since the center trunk areas show, and they are not very realistic. The picture on the product page is misleading. The effect is compounded by the great amount of wire for the lights that is tied towards the inside of the tree the wire being especially apparent because of the bare spots.

2. Granted, this tree will be a substantial timesaver over my old artificial tree, that I had to assemble branch by branch, shape, and string six sets of lights on. I'm 60 years old and my back is starting to complain about doing that. However, it is still going to be pretty time consuming to manually spread out all the branches on this tree. The branches definitely are plastic looking and feel very plastic as well. There is an attempt to mitigate this by the attachment of pine cones throughout the tree; it doesn't work.

Here are some other things to consider. This tree weighs about 50 pounds and comes in three sections. The two largest sections are about 20 pounds apiece by themselves. Everything was packed in one elongated box that was securely tied together, although Amazon's shipper left something to be desired because the box came with a deep slash and was stood vertically on end when the directions clearly say that the contents are fragile and the box is to be kept horizontal. For this reason, I had to put everything together to be sure nothing was broken and that the lights would work.

I'm 5'3" tall. At my height, I cannot put the top, smallest piece, which weighs around 10 pounds, on the tree, without standing on a stepstool. Also, obviously you have to have it fluffed out beforehand. Connecting the lights correctly is not easy and not anywhere near adequately explained in the instructions, but my husband figured it out intuitively (while I remain the mechanically challenged).

Now that I am committed to the new tree, it has to be stored. Putting it back into the original box could present problems in compressing, read jamming, all the branches and lights back inside. I elected to buy two, not one, tree bags for storage. The tree bags, from Amazon reviews, are not necessarily the most sturdy items, plus they are bulky. To counteract possible tearing the storage bags, I would suggest covering the metal pole ends of each section with an old sock, plus wrapping the metal stand in some old towels. I decided it was better to store the tree in two bags; I simply can't haul around a fifty pound tree in one bag, even if it all fits, and the bag is likely to rip from the weight.
