Lots of Functions July 10, 2008 I purchased this machine to do some basic sewing and create personalized gifts for friends and family. I am new to sewing, so I wanted something fairly simple with a few extra features. The manual and demo CD do a good job of explaining how to set up the machine and troubleshoot if something goes wrong. I love all the embroidery options already programmed in the machine and love the fact that you can purchase the PED Basic program to download even more fonts and patterns.
Brother SE 270D I love it! July 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine I purchased this machine about a week ago. I wanted an embroidery machine and did not want to invest a lot. After reading the directions and gathering what I needed in thread and stablizer I set up the machine for the first time.I absolutely love the way it winds bobins, easier than my Janome. I went through all the basics at first with different types of stitches and learned the on screen prompts with ease. I moved on to the embroidery functions and am very pleased. I picked up some free information on embroidery from my sewing shop and am amazed at what this little machine can do. It is small and light weight but for me that is great. The thing you have to do is start at the beginning and "read the directions carefully." There are a lot of functions and as far as I am concerned for the price it can not be beat. I do sewing for personal use and my family and think this will be a lot of fun to use. I used a design card by Simplicity that I also bought at the same time and had no trouble at all. Was easy to edit designs for placement and was surprised I was able to do this being new to this type of machine. I would only buy cards made for this machine or download with the Brother accessories you can get for this. I did find out my sewing store can make cards for this machine that work great, and that is because they use the all Brother cards and download tools. I know there are higher end machines and they can do more but for someone that has a good sewing machine and just wants to add embroidery and not spend a lot this is great. I have been sewing for over 40 years and using a new machine can be frustrating. This was NOT true of this machine. For standard sewing it is also great but I will contine to use my Janome for most of that and use this for the embroidery features. The monograming fonts built in are great and one of the reasons I wanted to get into this type of macine. By the way I bought this from Amazon on a Saturday and it was here in 3 days, free shipping used!
Dissappointed June 14, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I found that while the sewing machine can do many things,it is poorly constructed. I visited aa Brother Retailer who informed me that they not carry this machine because of the poor construction. They told me that I should be very careful with the thread cassette since they break easily and cannot be fixed and must be replaced which is costly. I find that sthreading the needle and winding the bobbin threads cumbersome and more complicated then is necessary. I still have not figured how to adjust the embroidery tensions to keep the thread from bunching up under the fabric. I am not a beginner when it comes to sewing and presently own a Viking 1100 and a White Serger. I bought the Brother as a way to get into the embroidery sewing. I still have the machine and will try to get it working to my satisfaction. If it breaks I will probably send it to the dump.
Mother's day gift June 8, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this as a gift for my mom (74 yrs old) to replace an old broken Singer she has. I was going to get another Singer but the reviews were not that favorable. After looking around, settled on this model. I have to say, it is pretty good. The auto-threading feature is very nifty. The major complaint would be the bobbin winder...it doesn't seem to have the right tension and tangles too easily when winding.
