Amazon.com Review Chroma Type 301 knives are fabulous in their revolutionary design and the sharpness of their Japanese steel blades. To protect your investment in this cutlery, sharpen the blades only with a Chroma Type 301 Whetstone. The rectangular 800-grit ceramic "stone" rests on a raised base for ease of use, which the included instructions illustrate. Basically, each side of the blade is held at a 15 to 20 degree angle during sharpening. Since each person has his or her own feel for motion and angle, it helps if the same person sharpens the knife each time. While professional chefs sharpen their knives almost daily, the home hobby chef probably only needs to sharpen a Chroma knife once every six months. Made in Japan, the whetstone is not intended for use on serrated knives. --Ann Bieri

quality stone April 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this whetstone to go with my set of chroma knives. I thought it was a little expensive, but ordered it anyway because I felt that if you have the knives then you should probably order this whetstone. It arrived very quickly and was very nice quality. It even has rubber feet on it so it will not slip when you are using it wet. You must soak the whetstone in water for about 15 minutes, until it no longer absorbs any more, prior to using. Your knife is then drawn back and forth on the whetstone at about a 10-15 degree angle to the blade of the knife. In very little time the blade is brought back to it's original sharpness or better. It is suggested to use the whetstone 70-80 percent more on the side of the hand that you use. That would mean if you are right handed then sharpen 70-80 percent more on that side than the left side or vice versa if you are left handed. I use a ripe tomato to test the sharpness on. In all I would say that this whetstone is a good valued tool that does a great job.
