Submariner Whatch Review July 14, 2008
I purchased mine for $6980.00 locally (Portland, OR.). So much for Amazon pricing policies! Better buy a winding machine though...will only run for 2 days without wearing or winding. You would think a $7000 watch could at least keep time for longer than that without help! Other than that; cool gadget but take care...many fakes available.
Beautiful watch that keeps great time. February 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am always bewildered by the occassional statements of Rolex owners that complain of their watch's inaccuracy. For Rolex and other great Swiss watches that have certified movements, the certification is from Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC), the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute, which is the institute responsible for certifying the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland. The standard for COSC as a chronometer is -5/+6 seconds per day. This figure will be consistent wheather it is fast or slow. Any Rolex owner with a COSC certified chronograph movement, that isn't keeping time within standards, simply needs to have it timed by a Rolex technician. I have a submariner that has been a nearly daily wear watch for 20 years. It has been within COSC specs, +1 second per day, for 20 years. I remember when I bought it new, the Rolex technician explained the mechanism to me and said it is nearly impossible to make a watch run at 0, and since nobody wants a watch to run slow, it is safer to time the watch for 1 second fast.

I love my Rolex, I love it for it's style and the feeling that can only be achieved with elegance. I know people wonder how can one justify paying thousands of dollars for a time piece, but it's all about the being good to yourself and loving quality and style !
My watch has never lost time as long as I wear it, but she is a jealous mistress and so when I wear one of my other watches for more then 48 hours my Rolly may stop. Other then that the service, performance and support of my Rolex and the Rolex Brand is tremendous !!
Tops for what it is January 6, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The major consumer magazine gave the Rolex an excellent review about 2 years ago and I concur. First, if as someone stated, their Rolex is off by 30 seconds a day, it is out of specs and Rolex will repair it. That same magazine gave it very high marks for accuracy. A Rolex is a piece of jewelry that is hand made beautifully, and tells time as well as is possible for a mechanical / automatic winding watch. It is truly water resistant and the currently used crystal is almost indestructible. I have had mine for about 10 years and I wear it 24 hours a day, every day. It still shine like fine jewelry, which you won't get after a year or two with a copy, let alone after 10 years. The sweep second hand, fit and finish, and durability carry old world beauty. Maybe it can't be appreciated by some high tech only people, but this is one techy who truly appreciates it. Yes, they are expensive and not for everyone, but if you can appreciate it and have the money, it is worth it. Faces and hands can be changed by Rolex any time you want and when cleaned and checked after about 5 year, it comes back looking like it is brand new.
The Best. January 2, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
I own two watches made by Rolex. One is a Sea Dweller which looks like a Submariner but is a little thicker and does not have the cyclops magnifier over the date. First of all, Rolex watches are automatic watches that wind using the wearer's motion. They are not "mechanical" watches as G Cordes says in his review.
My SeaDweller is spot on accurate and has been since I got it in 2002. Never been serviced or calibrated and it doesn't gain or lose time. My Datejust ran exactly 2 minutes fast when I got it and after having it calibrated at Rolex in New York it runs very well. I live in NYC and simply walked into the Rolex building on 5th and 53rd and they calibrated it. They also will clean your watch for free if you go in and head upstairs.
Rolex watches are masterpieces and cannot be compared to Quartz watches. They are completely hand made by Rolex. For example, the case of the submariner, which is made at Rolex' own foundry, uses 904 grade steel that is used in industrial settings and the like. So what, right? Wrong. This steel will last and last and last. By contrast, Omega's dive watches use 316L steel which is much cheaper. No other watch manufacturer uses 904 grade steel.
Finally, a Rolex will never decrease in value. My Sea Dweller cost $4000 in 2002 and now sells new for $5375 just 5 years later. That's a 25% gain, less any depreciation due to wear.
